Job overview
We are looking for a teacher to join our D&T Department at an exciting stage in its development. We currently offer D&T to GCSE level and will be introducing A level Product Design from September 2019. An ability to teach to A level is therefore desirable and to GCSE level is essential. It would also be highly desirable for candidates to be able to offer a second subject to KS3 level at least.
Currently our Design and Technology provision incorporates Food and Nutrition and Resistant Materials at Key Stages 3 and 4, with A-Level Product Design being introduced from September 2019. We are looking to appoint someone who is enthusiastic about Design Technology and enjoys teaching the subject to all abilities. The capability to teach to GCSE is essential and to A level is desirable and there is an expectation to take on some specific responsibility within the Department.
We offer Resistant Materials at Key Stage 3 to our Second and Third Year students, on a carousel. At St George’s, we follow the WJEC Eduqas GCSE Design and Technology course with our Fourth and Fifth Years and typically have around 15-19 students in each year group opting to study the subject to GCSE.
At Key Stage 3, students study a range of projects. Second Form students are introduced to the basics of accuracy in measuring and marking out prior to learning the skills required to cut and shape resistant materials with a range of hand and power tools. Mechanical principles are introduced, developing the knowledge bank required to design and manufacture useful and purposeful products in future. The Third Form further build on these skills with the introduction soldering and more detailed consideration of packaging all the components of a product. Considering the battery, PCB and speaker positions with respect to the needs of the user helps students to realise the more subtle and complex issues surrounding design. Graphical techniques to develop their freehand sketching as well as technical drawing are built upon as well as 2D and 3D CAD software to develop their design ideas. Rapid prototyping is available on the school’s 3D printers and laser cutter. These CAM processes compliment the hand skills taught alongside and allow our students to feel confident to undertake a GCSE in this subject when they reach the Fourth Form.
This is a department which achieves good results, where the ethos is founded on teamwork between teacher and technician instructor and in positive, helpful relationships with students. The department is expected to contribute to the various activities available, including surgeries and revision classes to support GCSE students, as well as sessions for Controlled Assessment.
Students are offered a variety of ways to learn, e.g. with hands-on projects and practical exercises. The VLE is used extensively, both for resources and to set homework tasks and track achievement. There is a department office shared with the Computer Science staff, and teaching takes place in workshops, an IT suite and design room.
Continuous professional development is crucial in this fast-moving subject. Members of the department are encouraged to keep updated on the examination system and attend conferences and courses. We feel that an enthusiasm for learning new skills helps us to engage our students and keep lessons fresh and relevant. We aim to give students the familiarity and confidence in using industry-standard techniques and so prepare them well for their future.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge
Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.
The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.
Academics
There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.
The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.
New staff and induction
There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.
All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.
