Job overview

St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy, part of the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi-Academy Trust are seeking to appoint a highly skilled and highly motivated English Teacher to join our busy, hardworking team.

If you are an experienced Teacher of English, able to actively promote the Catholic ethos of the academy and to have the ability to secure high quality student outcomes, we would welcome an application to our school.

St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy is a mixed, comprehensive, Roman Catholic secondary school situated in the thriving town of Glossop, Derbyshire. It is part of the newly formed Catholic Multi Academy Trust; St Ralph Sherwin.

A smaller than average secondary school, St Philip Howard currently has 480 pupils on roll and is growing rapidly. St Philip Howard is on a journey to outstanding and since the Academy opened in September 2015 has gone from strength to strength. The recent Inspections which took place in 2018 have confirmed this.

Ofsted inspected the Academy in January 2018. Inspectors acknowledged the hard work and commitment of the Senior Leadership Team, Staff and Governors. ‘Leaders have worked tirelessly, often under difficult circumstances, to improve the school. Many significant issues have been addressed, including those associated with finance, staffing and with the structures required for a school to function well. Their actions have been effective and the school has improved.’ (Ofsted January 2018)

The recent Diocesan Canonical Inspection in June 2018 judged the Academy to be a ‘Good Catholic School’.

The school is at the heart of a strong community working together to ensure that St Philip Howard is the school of choice in Glossop and the surrounding areas: #Team SPH is dedicated to providing the best possible outcomes for all the pupils at St Philip Howard.

‘Leaders ensure that pupils experience a full range of experiences outside of the school day. The Catholic ethos permeates the school’s work and pupils have many opportunities to be involved in their community and to support those in need. Pupils fundraise; for example, the gratitude club raises funds for the less fortunate within the local area.’ (Ofsted January 2018)

#Team English is a strong department.

The department achieves consistently good results. This year they achieved:

82% - Grade 4 -9

65% - Grade 5-9

30% - Grade 7-9

‘In English, pupils, including disadvantaged pupils, pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities and the most able, make the progress they should because of expert teaching.’ (Ofsted January 2018)

Visits to the school are encouraged and appointments can be made by calling Vicky on 01457 653611.
