This is a complete unit of work aimed at Year 5 for their Imagery Poetry unit of work. It is based on the children writing an imagery poem about a Greek mythical creature of their choice (Minotaur, Dragon, Cyclops, Medusa). However, this unit of work can be adapted easily if you wish to write about a different topic (e.g. Romans, Victorians, Animals, Seasons).

The resource includes:

  • Skeleton Plan (overview of unit)
  • Planning for 3 weeks of lessons (3 days in week 1 due to training days, 4 lessons in week 2 and 3 due to drama lessons on Wednesdays)
  • Resources for each lesson differentiated when necessary
  • Sentence level lessons aimed specifically at Year 5 targets (expanded noun phrases and commas for parenthesis)
  • Planning templates (differentiated four ways)
  • Up-leveling checklists (differentiated three ways)
  • Assessment opportunities at the beginning and end of the unit to allow for in writing assessment and proof of progress.

Please note: I did not write any of the poems used myself. All copyright for the texts used goes to the poets (names given).
