Lesson 10-11 Volcanoes

This is a double lesson where studetns investigate the anatomy of a volcano and what the 3 different types of volcanoes are. Starter activity is to label the anatomy of a volcano. Main: Look at specific examples of volcanic eruptions and complete a mind map of specific case study examples, (worksheet included). In groups students have to choose one of 3 real life volcanoes: Bardon Hill Quarry (Scotland) Montserrat Icelandic (2010 one) Instructions and model resources attahced and included as pdfs. They have to follow the instructions to build a model of their chosen volcano in groups and then complete a series of activites to complete a description of its location and its specific features as an 3D model. Plenary: A question to get students thinking and to make links to what they’ve learnt in lesosn by assessing 'Why the effects of volcanoes differ?

This lesson looks at different strategies that can be used to predict volcanic eruptions, what hazard mapping is and the 3P’s. There is an assessed homework that pupils should complete as homework and this is usually given out and handed in before the revision session, so during the revision session I would go through the assessed homework and anything else that pupils didn’t understand. The assessed homework would count towards their overall grade for that theme. A detailed markscheme and grade boundaries are included. Lesson 4 Distribution of Volcanoes

Lesson on the distribution of Volcanoes using top trump volcano cards. Certain cards are picked- same ones from several packs are given to the students in groupos of 3-4. They play top trumps and then discuss the questions on the board after the LOs slide. After having shared feedback. Students are to make links to the plate boundaries where students are to find volcanoes (see previous lesson) and to assess why certain volcanoes have specific characteristics from the top trump cards. They have a series of activities to complete using the Wider World textbook. This can be adapted using a GCSE textbook e.g. AQA one. Worksheet included.
