AQA Psychology issues and debates work booklet

Work booklet given to Y12 student to complete over the summer holidays. Students had some knowledge of the issues and debates content but had not covered it in any great depth. This booklet therefore contains enough detail for them to have a good understanding of the content but also leaves enough gaps for the students to use their existing knowledge and additional research skills to complete. Knowledge review questions are included at the end of every sub topic. As always, I recommend students use the Tutor2u and Simply Psychology sites as a point of reference. A poster that can be printed and given to students to encourage greater use of keywords, knowledge of command words and effective evaluation. It contains a list of key words for the memory, perception and development topics as well as the title of the key studies required for each topic. It has an evaluation diagram on there to encourage students to ‘build’ their evaluation and also a description of what the three main command words are (describe, apply, evaluate). My students love this and refer to it often.

Students reduce and summarise information describing the role of hormones in sex and gender development and evaluate it using research evidence. Designed to be used with the Hodder ‘AQA Psychology Book 2’ (Lawton and Willard), but would also work with other texts. This activity could be used when introducing the topic, or done from memory as a revision activity to test understanding. A filled in version is provided, which could also be adapted, e.g. with gaps to fill in for less able students.

'Your Fantastic Elastic Brain’ is a fun and engaging book in which children can learn about the vast capabilities of the brain, and how we all have the ability to stretch and grow our own brains to create the happiest, healthiest human being possible! Introductory lessons in the development unit developing student knowledge of early brain development. Students are engaged through wholly student led tasks developing their knowledge of key terms, key brain areas and the influence of nature vs nurture. Experience teaching these lessons (2x50 minutes) highlighted the fact that it is meant to challenge the most able through the use of extended reading and newspaper articles but can be easily differentiated down with weaker students only completing some of the nature/nurture tasks. The thinking and discussion questions can be used as plenary/starter to assess progress between lesson 1 and 2.

However, the scientific processes have been explained in a manner accessible to all, whether the viewer has a scientific background or not. In this video the biological and physiological process of short-term stress is explained with the aid an example and colourful images.
