Xenophobia and the Refugee Crisis

Xenophobia and the Refugee Crisis

Suitable for year 6 and up, this is a single lesson, complete with clips and independent activities, to explain to your students what the refugee crisis is, how it happened, and if we should help. These can either be teacher led activities or student led, using a carousel system or marketplace. It therefore lends itself well to differentiation, and can be adapted to be an assembly too. 2 video clips included in this pack.

The Refugee Crisis: Be the Change

The Refugee Crisis: Be the Change

This 4-10 lesson pack of resources (suitable for any student, from year 5-year13) has been a long time in the making being refined and edited through 4 years of teaching about refugees and asylum seekers. It attempts to include anything your school might need to explain the refugee crisis to your students and achieve a certificate as a School of Sanctuary. 22 Files come in this pack which include: 5 lessons + A written assessment which are: 1) What is the refugee crisis and xenophobia 2) Key terms and Mythbusting 3) Why do people seek asylum 4) Moral Duty and Religious Perspectives (SMSC/RE) 5) Taking Action: Be the Change you want to see and SCHOOLS OF SANCTUARY (https://schools.cityofsanctuary.org) 6) Written Assessment What's more, you also get a compilation of free resources in this pack which are not made by me for your convenience, shared here for educational purposes. This includes: the Amnesty made board game: the great escape, structured role plays, assemblies, the rights of the child card sorts and more. Plenty of scope for differentiation and self directed study/ independent learning skills here, as well as research activities for higher ability students. You can also use the work your students produce in this pack to get 'School of Sanctuary Status': there are a growing number of schools standing up to say they welcome asylum seekers and refugees. This is great for SMSC, PHSE, and RS as well as diversity and inclusion evidence. To get in touch with your local group, visit www.cityofsanctuary.org , and the criteria for becoming a school of sanctuary is what this short syllabus is built around. To see the criteria yourself go to https://schools.cityofsanctuary.org.
