Nutrition Scheme of Learning, Workbook and Case Studies

This Scheme of Learning & workbook was designed for BTEC Health & Social care Unit 21 Nutrition. The workbooks runs alongside the SOL, learners can complete the activities in class or independently. Workbook covers pass critieria only, case studies can be used as starter, in lesson or plenary activities. Due to the amount of GLH that i had for this unit, i completed a number of pages in class with the learners and then set them pages to complete on their study days, researching information or producing posters were set as homework or independent study.

Plenary Activity

Learners are asked to think about what they have learnt in the lesson and write down how they link with English, Maths, Employability, Equality & Diversity & British Values. Allows the learners to identify where these areas have been promoted and understand how they can be applied to any subject being taught, gets the learners to think in a wider range. Subjects can be taken out for the activity depending on the topics being taught.

I designed this activity for Level 2 BTEC learners, getting them use to the command words found in their assignments. Links with embedding English as they will use a dictionary to search for the definitions of each word. The tasks can support the learners understanding of each command word and put them into practice. Can be adapted for any Level and extra assignment tips can be added.

**18-20 full lessons on the Human Body. ** All lessons have comprehensive resources to carry out (powerpoint and worksheets etc.). 18-20 as it depends how quickly you get through/how long your lessons are (some can be extended to multiple lessons). Topics include: Skeleton, Muscles, ligaments/tendons, respiration, response time, ventilation, lung models, alveoli, circulation, gas exchange, doping (athlete case studies), drugs and how exercise affects the body systems. This is used for Year 8, but could be easily adapted for MAT year 7 or lower year 9 Biology/science classes as you see fit.

Independent Living

A unit of 14 x 1 hour long, fully resourced life skills / PSHE lessons with a focus on independent living, this pack is particularly suited to KS4 and has been prepared to fit the PSHE Associations KS4 topic of ‘Living in the Wider World.’ This could easily be used for KS3 or ASDAN too and everything is editable, so you can always change it to suit your classes if you like. This has been written for a year 3 assembly but can easily be adapted for other age groups. The assembly follows the adventures of Big Skeleton, Little Skeleton and their dog Sherlock Bones. Big and Little just want to eat junk food all day so Sherlock tells them all about how to have a healthy diet. Cast: The cast is easily adaptable to suit a class of 25 or more children. Main characters: Narrator Big Skeleton Little Skeleton Sherlock Bones The Carbohydrates Group The Fats and Sugars Group The Proteins Group The Dairy Group The Fruit and Vegetable Group Props: A bag of crisps A “script” for the narrator See through sandwich bags containing weights of sugars (x4) A 45g bar of Dairy Milk A bottle of banana milkshake A box of Coco pops A diary A radio (doesn’t have to work) Music: Suggested: Food groups are Rockin’ Tonight (available through YouTube) Funny Bones cartoon theme and end credits. Duration: The script should last about 15 to 20 minutes; this does not include music. The script can be edited or amended to suit the needs of the children taking part in the assembly or to fit in with what the students have been covering in class.

Did you know it takes 2,393 litres of water to make just one hamburger, and 15,415 litres to make one steak? Animal agriculture requires a huge amount of land, food, energy, and water. The WorldWatch Institute estimates that a staggering 51 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture, and the United Nations has also urged everyone to eat less meat to combat global warming. For green conscious schools who invest a lot of time and effort into teaching students to use less electricity, walk to school instead of driving, and take shorter showers (all great initiatives), this information may come as a surprise. The impact that raising livestock has on the environment is not as widely known as other factors, such as transportation and burning fossil fuels. If your school is serious about treading lightly on the planet, teaching students about the importance of eating less meat is vital.
