French Cultural Lesson Bundle - Mystery Countries, Nandos Takeaway Menu , Project Research Sheet

French Cultural Lesson Bundle - Mystery Countries, Nandos Takeaway Menu , Project Research Sheet

A brilliant bundle, encouraging higher-order thinking skills and independent learning. Lessons are fabulous to teach and enourage students to identify mystery TL-speaking countries from a series of activities and clues (food, geography, music etc.). Nandos Takeaway Menu asks students to pick their own mini topics from a series of increasingly challenging options, giving them ownership. My most popular lessons!

Market experience- Au Marche

Market experience- Au Marche

This lesson/activity can be approached from various angles. I used it as an introduction to phrasing questions as we had learnt the basic- ‘Puis-je avoir….?’ with classroom equipment. (The latter question was taught using sign language and is very effective with lower ability pupils). Pupils loved asking for food items. You can add a ‘bureau d’echange’ and pretend to swap for euros. This can lead onto a food topic or travelling topic. The activity of a market will need to be set up prior to the lesson and class rules be established. Create incentives which will reward pupils. One year, it was decoding a clue as they visited each shop. Everyone knows their own cohort. I have included some publisher documents which can be amended to create market stall signs. This can be also linked with D & T department. Pupils were looking at healthy eating and mediterranean produces. They decided to make a salad nicoise. I created a basic cook sheet with the D & T teacher and we arranged the stalls to have the correct items to make this salad. So not to waste tuna we provided bags of tuna!

KS2 Taster Lesson (French)

KS2 Taster Lesson (French)

This is a taster lesson for KS2 pupils in French. It follows the theme of food technology (making croissants) but also covers a little general knowledge as a starter activity, culture and numeracy. It may seem slightly complicated but the language (following a recipe) is really repetitive so pupils will be able to grasp it. I used this over a period of an hour and had French handwriting sheets on standby just in case pupils finished early and wanted to practise writing out the recipe in that particular style, just to add a little extra something to their experience. Lots of pupils wanted to take the handwriting sheets home to write out the recipe in their own time. This was used with Y5 pupils from inner city schools at a mixed, comprehensive secondary school. It took a long time to make so please, enjoy!

Lesson PowerPoint: Mystery French-Speaking Country Cultural Lesson + Worksheet (Mauritius)

Lesson PowerPoint: Mystery French-Speaking Country Cultural Lesson + Worksheet (Mauritius)

An excellent lesson, providing students with clues as to a mystery Francophone country and asking them to detect which one it might be. 19 slides in total, great fun to teach. Fully animated with all answers, clear directions for students and support for teacher in Notes section of slides if required. Challenge options included within activities to extend HA. The lesson begins by asking students to note down on their whiteboards all that they know about France, and all that they know about French-speaking countries. Activity 1 - Match the French name for the country to the English translation and the correct flag, drawing a star next to the country if you think it has French as an official language. Activity 2- Match the Mystery Country's national dishes to the English translations, and the images if possible. Activity 3 - Use the French clues provided to locate the Mystery Country on the map. Activity 4 - Use the map and the images to work out where the Mystery Country might be. Activity 5 - See how many phrases can be recognised in the song lyrics for a famous band from the Mystery Country (Kana - Pas de problèmes). Think, pair, share and singalong at end. Lesson is reviewed using a Plenary Triangle, asking students to reflect on one thing that they knew already, three things that they've learned during the lesson, and one thing that they would like to know more about. The final section can be set as a research project for homework if wished. Great to fit into modules about Travel and Tourism, food, song, cultural similarities and differences, geography, or as a filler lesson before a holiday. A very popular lesson that always goes down a storm!

Technology - Pair work reading activity

Technology - Pair work reading activity

Encourages pupils to scan texts for familiar language and then try to work out new vocab before using a dictionary. Divide your class into groups of 4-6 pupils. Give each group 1 copy of the 5 mini texts about Google glasses. Give each pupil a copy of the worksheet. Pupils study one of the texts and answer any relevant questions before swapping the text with other pupils in their group. Keep the 5 texts circulating around the groups until pupils have answered all the questions. Every now and then play some timed music (approx. 2 minutes?) and only when they hear the music are they allowed to use a dictionary. When the music stops they have to close dictionaries!

French Teaching Resources. Les 24 Heures du Mans. Le Mans. Motorsport. Cars.

These resources are designed to give the students a taste of the thrilling Le Mans ambience and an appreciation of the prestige, dangers and challenges of the event! It uses exciting YouTube clips, colourful slides, matching cards, a video worksheet and a poem/writing template to imagine being a driver in Le Mans. A great end of term lesson! Slide 2 states the objective: Objectif: To learn facts and vocabulary related to Les 24 heures du Mans. All: Will learn 7 new facts and French words. Most: Will learn 9 new facts and French words/ phrases. Some: Will learn 10+ new facts and French words/ phrases. Slide 3 is the warmer and lesson hook. It asks : Qu’est-ce que c’est Les 24 Heures du Mans? There is then a link to the fantastic 1 mins 25 sec trailer for The Journey to Le Mans. The students can then share facts and French vocabulary which they already know. The students then match 9 x English- French cards with facts about Le Mans e.g. Les 24 Heures du Mans sont une course automobile d'une durée de 24 heures. Le Mans est dans le département de la Sarthe en France. La première course s’est déroulée en 1923. Elle est une des courses les plus prestigieuses au monde. Slides 5-11 allow you to run through the information on the cards and elicit the English. Slide 12 links to the worksheet in the resources. The students match French-English vocabulary: 1. Un mécanicien 2. Le podium 3. Un accident 4. Un casque 5. Le coucher du soleil 6. Le lever du soleil 7. Le drapeau à damier 8. Une voiture hybride 9. Un pneu 10. La nuit They then watch the Michelin 2015 Le Mans Highlights (3 minutes 14 secs), ticking the vocabulary they see (I’ve added a couple of additional words to the worksheet). The extension task is to list other things they see. Slide 14 is to be used with the (more detailed) support sheet. It sets out the final creative task: All: You are a Le Mans racing driver! Write a poem/ account of your 24 hours at Le Mans! You may wish to use the suggested template below: Il est 14h59. J’attends. Je suis prêt/ prête. Je suis calme. (time + verb + adjective) Il est 15h00. Le Tricolore! On commence! Je suis confiant/ confiante. Je suis fier/ fière. Il est 22h00. Le coucher du soleil….. Most: Build in negatives e.g. je ne dors pas. Some: Build in: adverbs e.g. parfois and toujours… connectives e.g. et, mais, cependant… other tenses e.g. je voudrais + infinitive. The final slide then gives the opportunity for reflection. I hope you enjoy using these resources!
