**Beautiful colouring/sheet sheet and text from the book; The Determined Dreamer’ to encourage to children to think about what their dreams are. ** The text creates a wonderful discussion point on the beauty, and the importance, of having a dream in their life, something they work towards hope for, something that is just for them. This could lead into their own poem about dreams. Extract from the book reads; *‘Dreams are precious things. They are worth more than silver or gold, yet they are free. Everyone can own a dream, no matter who they are or where they are from. Dreams must be loved, treasured, nurtured and encouraged to grow strong and blossom.’ * Follow on from this activity by exploring being determined to reach their dreams/goals, having a determined attitude. See ‘Being a Determined Dreamer’ Word-Search and ‘I am a Determined Dreamer Colouring Sheet’. Based on the book Ernie Gonzales: The Determined Dreamer. Comprehension/Inference - worksheet; predicting how the author may use a character within a story

(0)
What type of character do you think Jose is and how do you think the author may use him in the story? Jose the turtle has decided to help the snails on their journey. Watch the video of the reading of Chapter 13 (or read the chapter). Discuss how the author may use him in the story, predict what may happen next. Good activity for practicing inference in comprehension to make an assumption of the character based on the direction of the story and the needs of the other characters in the story. To determine where and how this new character will be used in the story based on previous events. Includes a creative writing activity. Also helps pupils understanding how different characters are used within stories to drive the plot forward. For use in Key stage 2 English lessons (comprehension), or home schooling. Chapter is read by the author. See all videos for full book reading with activities and author writing tips in each video, with resources available for each. Included are both negative and positive words, children are encouraged to use a dictionary/thesaurus, and to use different colour pencils to identify negative and positive words. 10 Pre-planned, Guided Stories - assisted story writing worksheets for independent writing. KS2 +

**10 pre-planned story worksheets for reluctant writers or improving writing. Supports story hill idea and includes key tool suggestions. Helps simplify and break down the task of story writing. ** As a children’s author and creative writing tutor I know that it’s often its a daunting task to write a whole story form beginning to end. There so are many elements needed to make a good story, and thats after you have come up with a good clear and simple plot. I created these worksheets for use with my students to help them navigate the process of writing a story and to make it less daunting for them so they can learn the feel of writing a story and see themselves finish the task from beginning to end. Each worksheet includes a basic plot already mapped out; opening, build up, problem, solution and ending, plus, guidelines/suggestions for what to add for each section, which become less and less as they progress throughout each story, helping them to find their own way of writing. These stories cover varied themes and are aimed at variety of ages between approx 6-12 years. Story titles include: Amber & the Midnight Monster The Plane to Madrid The Two Boys & the Lighthouse The Old Man & the Balloon The Children & the Giant Bee The Alien Aircraft The Man & the Burning House The Troll & the Stink-Bomb Lost in the Woods Caught in a Snare Pupils can follow the suggestions and write the stories, gradually learning how a story is put together, with the aim of being able to apply that to their own stories and independent writing. Guidelines include where to add character description, senses, setting description, action, character emotion etc. You may like to use my Ingredients cards which are writing tools needed in a story (character setting, description, senses, action, when etc) children can choose what ingredients they think they need for each part of the story. You may prefer to purchase this as part of a creative writing bundle which includes tools for story writing…coming soon! www.bethshepherd.com Thanks Beth

Explore a Good One - Look at short story and identify what writing tools/ ingredients are used.

Use this short story and a list of story writing ingredients to identify how, what and where ingredients have been used to make it work well. Stories are made up of multiple elements; character emotion/description, suspense, when, setting, descriptions, action and much more. Once children understand the different elements used in a story it can help them when writing their own. I call them story ingredients, and knowing what ingredients are needed throughout their story before they write it can make, the often challenging task of writing a whole story, a lot easier. Included in this down load is a story worksheet, a list of ingredients and an example sheet. Simply download and print at home. Thanks Beth

'If You Ever Saw a Monster' - 4 activities in 1; Creating a character and Diary/Journal writing

(0)
A fun and engaging creative writing activity for KS2 pupils. With a focuses on creating and developing a character, using senses to make good descriptions and a journal entry to build upon those descriptions. This lessons begins with a fill in the blank story where pupils can add in full sentences and descriptive words to complete the story and design their monster. The story uses sight, touch, smell and emotions to describe the character and is a great way to introduce the idea of using senses (and emotions to create a story), which they can later apply to the other writing activites in the lesson. Works well with my description prompt cards which helps them focus on one description element at a time to help them identify different tools needed to build a good story. (See my other resources). Next, pupils can create a character profile for their monster in more detail with a profile sheet, answering questions such as; age, family, physical description of their character. This leads them into writing ‘Character Profile Card’; a paragraph describing their character. Lastly, pupils can use information gathered on their character to write a diary/journal entry for the day they saw a monster. This is a great activity to put into practice what they have learnt about adding descriptions to build their writing piece and bring it to life. Great activity to help children with their creative writing and the use of creative writing tool kit. I am a children’s author, my books include; ‘Ernie Gonzales: The Determined Dreamer’ and 'Escape from Paradise", and I tutor creative writing privately and in schools, to 6-11 year olds. I have a passion for writing and teaching kids, I also love making my own resources and sharing them with others. See my free creative writing and comprehensions resources to accompany my books.
