Job overview

Blackburn Primary and Hopefield Nursery Class are non-denominational establishments and serves part of the community of Blackburn in West Lothian.   Blackburn Primary School and Hopefield Nursery Class serves an area of multiple deprivations and is in decile band 1 where there are a high percentage of children entitled to free meals.

This session the school roll is 141 of which 12 pupils are in the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classes, 69 pupils are mainstream and 60 pupils in the nursery. The school role is steadily increasing where the number of pupils coming into Primary 1 is double the number of P7 leavers.   The school currently has 4 mainstream classes and 2 ASD classes with 6 Class Teachers, 1 Teacher (Additional Support Needs), 1 Principal Teacher, and a Head Teacher. The school benefits from brass tuition which is provided for children from P5 to P7. The school is well supported by a team of Pupil Support Workers who assist pupils in class. Clerical support is provided by one Administrative Assistant. The school runs a very successful Breakfast Club which is well attended by the children. There is an established and fully supportive Parent Council, who is very active in school, especially in the areas of fundraising and general parental communication and liaison.

The school has an excellent relationship with the Cluster Schools and works in partnership with Community Action Blackburn and support services.

Hopefield Nursery Class is an offsite provision that provides 30 nursery places for both morning and afternoon children. The Nursery is a non-denominational setting catering for children aged 3-5 and serves both Blackburn Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School. It is an integrated provision which supports multi agency working between Education, Social Policy and Health. The 30/30 nursery class offers Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) for 3-5 year olds and the provision is effectively managed by a part-time Class Teacher (0.5), supported by an Early Years Officer (EO), two Nursery Nurses and a Pupil Support Worker. The Head Teacher of Blackburn Primary School is responsible for the nursery provision.
