Job overview

Following promotion of our current Deputy Head, Bedales is looking to appoint our next Deputy Head (Co-curricular & Operational) at a particularly exciting time in our development. The successful applicant will be responsible for the operational leadership of the school on a day-to-day basis, with additional responsibility for the structure, content and delivery of our exciting co-curricular programme, as we embark on formulating a 10-year strategic plan.

You will directly line manage the Director of Music, the Head of Drama, the Head of Dance and the Director of Sport. As an experienced, well-qualified teacher for your subject, you will model academic excellence and communicate it enthusiastically to students to develop their life-long love of learning.

Our school is a unique educational establishment, set in beautiful Hampshire countryside, in the heart of the South Downs National Park. Our aim is to create an environment where questioning, divergent thinking and freedom to learn from mistakes are all encouraged. Central to our success is the sense that each person is a member of our community whose voice is entitled to be heard and treated with respect. Both our staff and students expect of each other the best kind of relationships – co-operative, authentic and trustful.

Start date is September 2022 or January 2023. A competitive salary package, including accommodation and fee remission is offered.

Experience & Background

To succeed in this position, you will have excellent management skills and be ready to embrace change with positivity and a ‘can-do’ approach. As an experienced and capable change manager you have the ability to turn ideas into plans and actions. Experience as an Ofsted/ISI Inspector would be desirable but not essential. You should also be keen to play a full and inclusive role in the life of our busy boarding community and be able to contribute to the development of our innovative school through embracing new ways of teaching, learning, and working.

Timetable

You will be timetabled to teach 8-10 lessons a week. You will also be responsible for a small tutor group. Learning takes place throughout the day and encompasses tutoring, co-curricular activities, and support and extension sessions as well as subject lessons. Most core curriculum commitments for students are scheduled from 09:25 hrs to 18:00 hrs on Monday to Friday, and until 13:00 hrs on Saturday. Students also have access to optional activities before and after the main school day. Typically, students do not have core curriculum lessons scheduled on Wednesday afternoons. Bedales is a busy boarding school so work during the evenings, weekends and holidays may be required depending on the nature of the post.
