Job overview

PRE-PREP GAP STUDENT

St Michael’s Prep School is a co-educational day school with 475 children aged 2-13, enjoying a beautiful location, overlooking 100 acres of land. Our state-of-the-art Pre-Prep building sets each child on a learning journey that is rich, active and inspiring. Children continue into the Prep School, taught by many specialist professionals who work throughout the school to provide a rich array of curricular and co-curricular opportunities.

Are you planning a career working with children or teaching? Do you need experience to get your first job or get onto a course? Then look no further. Come and join the fantastic team at St Michael’s as one of three St Michael’s Gap Students.  In this role you can work with the Pre-Prep team to prepare for a career working with children and demonstrate the impact you can have on children’s lives. The “gapper” role is a one-year post which gives you an insight into a range of roles on offer in schools. No two days are the same.

You will help with administrative work, lunch and catering duties, working in the classrooms with children from 2 years old to 7 years. Our Pre-school Nursery and Kindergarten are particularly popular so if you can create animals out of playdoh and build sandcastles you may be the Gap Student for us! You will learn to plan, organise, support, progress, nurture and enrich the lives of our youngest children and be a reliable team player. Between the hours of 4pm and 7pm you will be working in our after-school club with children from Reception up to Year 8, helping to facilitate games and craft projects.

Values and vision

Joy is at the heart of life at St Michael’s: the joy of our children, the joy of our community and the Joy and Wonder of Learning. St Michael’s is driven by a passionate belief in the value and power of learning: for children, for teachers, for parents and everyone who comes into contact with us.

St Michael’s is an inclusive school where each individual is known, valued and celebrated. We want our children to embrace each day and be inspired by their lessons and co-curricular activities.

We believe in providing a rounded education where children can pursue their passions, challenge themselves and enjoy a creative and innovative curriculum. We are continually looking for ways to improve our curriculum and facilities, making them more vibrant, inspiring and in step with our ever-changing world. Access to our 100 acre site plays an important role in the pupils’ learning and growth, developing them into mindful and knowledgeable citizens who will care for their environments throughout their lives.

Our growth mindset approach to teaching and learning ensures that every child understands the value of failure in their path to success. St Michael’s children are not afraid to get things wrong, or judgemental of others’ mistakes, and this is something they carry with them.

Our school motto: perseverantia, sapientia, gratia (perseverance, wisdom and gratitude) encapsulates our ethos of striving for success and using our skills to make a difference. These values are instilled daily throughout the St Michael’s journey.

We strongly believe that in order to teach our children about the importance of life-long learning, we must first model this ourselves. Our staff undergo regular professional development and parents are also invited to a range of workshops on relevant topics.

We are confident that when our pupils move on from St Michael’s, they will use the wisdom, skills and values that we taught them to make a positive change in the world.

ISI report

“Children’s personal and emotional development is outstanding. The children have learnt age appropriate independent skills. They feel safe, secure and happy, enabling them to make progress and be ready for the next stage of their learning. The excellent learning and care provision meets the needs of the range of children who attend. As the teaching is thoroughly planned based on children’s progress it is matched closely to their needs.”
