Barton Hill Academy, based in Torquay, Devon, opened September 2012 and is sponsored by the Academies Enterprise Trust (AET).  The Academy currently has 660 pupils on roll aged 3-11.  We aim for every child to have a happy and active primary education in an environment that is caring and supporting. We are looking for a Nursery Teaching Assistant Apprentice to join our hard working and successful team.  The role will involve supporting individuals or small groups of pupils with learning needs. The ability to engage the children in play activities, work with a small group of children and fulfil general classroom duties will also be essential. Ideally you should have some experience, but primarily we are looking for someone who is adaptable, flexible, caring and enthusiastic, with a smile for all situations. You will be joining a lively and friendly team in a large town school.

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities.

The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually, ensuring pupils understand the work set, know their learning objectives and stay on task in order to make progress.

You will complete a  Level 3 Teaching Assistant Standard and have the opportunity to gain a Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for  Teaching and Learning in the Schools.  You may also be required to complete English, Maths and IT Functional Skills (this will be determined by existing qualifications).

Your Trainer/Assessor will assess you in the workplace on a monthly basis. In between these meetings you will have dedicated time away from your job to work on the apprenticeship and collate evidence for your apprenticeship e-portfolio with ongoing support from your Manager and Trainer/Assessor.

This is an exciting opportunity to be in a real job, with real variety, from day one whilst working towards a qualification.

The essential requirements for this role are:

  • GCSE Maths and English Grade A-C or equivalent or willingness to work towards English and Maths functional skills qualifications
  • Good IT skills
  • Basic understanding of child development and learning, classroom roles and responsibilities and confidentiality
  • You must be resident in England and have the right to work in UK, aged over 16 and not in full time education or hold University degree
  • To be eligible for the Apprenticeship, applicants must have resided in the UK or EEA for 3 years prior to the start of the Apprenticeship.

This will be a fixed term position and the duration of the apprenticeship will be determined by the job role and current skills. The minimum length of the apprenticeship will be one year and one week.

As the sponsor, AET believes that all young people deserve to become world-class learners – to learn, enjoy, succeed and thrive in a first rate educational environment with the best facilities, the best teaching and the most up-to-date resources available to them.  In each of our academies, you will benefit from visionary, inspirational and dynamic leadership and be empowered to develop your own skills with access to world-class CPD and Talent Management programmes.  You will also be entitled to the following benefits: a health cash plan and childcare vouchers.

This position is required to commence September 2018.

More than a job...it's an adventure in education.

With 631 children on our roll and a brand new nursery provision (Pebbles Nursery) open from September 2021, we are a large 3 form entry primary school based in Torquay. The key to ensuring our children can succeed is having a caring, stimulating and stable environment in which to enjoy their childhood. We work hard to ensure the environment provided by our school allows every child to grow into happy, caring members of the community.

In recent years enormous strides have been made to increase learning standards and we are proud to be judged as 'a good' school by Ofsted. We were last fully inspected in May 2014 and had another short inspection in March 2018. To view all our Ofsted reports please click here.  The proportion of our children eligible for pupil premium is well above average and our dedicated teachers and support staff continue to develop a curriculum that inspires and prepares them for their future.

We are always looking for hardworking and ambitious professionals to help our students succeed. We and the Trust will provide all the support necessary to help you if you were to join us.

We hope that you will take the time to come and see and experience for yourself the warm and welcoming atmosphere here at Barton Hill.

Our Curriculum

At Barton Hill Academy we aim to make learning aspirational, creative and fun- we plan creative learning journeys for our children, based on what we know they need to learn, what is relevant for them, the National Curriculum and some of their own ideas and interests. The process of planning a creative, quality rich learning experience is consistent throughout the school.

We have used information in the National Curriculum and are careful to plan a high quality starting point, or foci for the creative learning journey- something real for the children to experience, often a well-planned high quality trip, exploring the local environment and beyond.

The teachers introduce the theme to the children- and get their input to be added to the web diagrams. They decide on what the final experience is going to be for the learning journey (for example- this could be an exhibition, a performance, a trip etc.)

Our curriculum map skills and the National curriculum are used as signposts along the creative learning journey to ensure continuity and progression- we use them in a cross curricular way (so for instance, letter writing might be taught through a project all about Power of reading book being studied).

Our Specialism and Awards

We hold International School Status and the Arts Mark 'gold' award for our creative curriculum.
