Job overview

Job Title: Primary or Maths Teacher with Boys' Games

Location: Casterton, Sedbergh Prep School

Contract Type: Full-time, permanent

Salary: Competitive, in line with skills & experience

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co-educational Boarding School. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference and the Headmaster of the Prep School is a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.

This vacancy is flexible in order to appoint the best possible candidate. The successful applicant may be appointed as a Key Stage 2 Form Tutor with responsibility for literacy and numeracy for their class, or as a maths specialist with responsibility up to and including Year 8.

Quality teaching in the classroom, with an ability to differentiate, use assessment for planning and to build a caring relationship with pupils and parents alike, are key skills for this appointment. The School is proud of its recent ISI Inspection and we are ambitious for all of our pupils’ academic attainment and progress.

Applications from experienced teachers with a track record of success, or from outstanding newly qualified teachers, are equally welcome.

As a busy boarding school, a commitment to the life of pupils outside of the school day is vital. All staff play a part in evening boarding duties and Sunday excursions and pupils in Years 7 and 8 enjoy Saturday school.

Sport is within the DNA of the School and enjoys both healthy lesson allocation and a high degree of coaching expertise. The post involves around 0.5 FTE teaching Boys’ Games and experience in playing or coaching rugby to a high level is a particular advantage.

Responsibility for teams involves passion and dedication, including the willingness to staff away fixtures and sports tours where required, but is richly rewarded through the enthusiasm and passion paid back through the pupils. The majority of fixtures are played on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons.

The successful candidate will be adept at pupil management and pastoral care, as well as understanding what it takes to promote skills development and progress in pupils aged 8 to 13 years in the major team games of rugby, hockey and cricket.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To teach a range of subjects to Key Stage 2 pupils, particularly maths and English, or to specialize in maths teaching up to and including Year 8. The ability to differentiate according to individual needs, including pupils with SEND or EAL, is essential.
  • To teach exciting and enjoyable boys’ Games sessions, promoting progress for all players. Expertise in rugby coaching is desirable.
  • To maintain comprehensive records of formative and summative assessment, using this information to effectively plan the next steps in learning and participate in pupil progress meetings.
  • To inform parents of their child’s progress through written reports, parents’ meetings and informal communication.
  • To maintain an exciting, safe and attractive classroom environment for learning.
  • To engage in professional development opportunities provided by the School.

Person Specification:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, with QTS status.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Strong pastoral care and empathy for young children.
  • Resilience to the demands of a busy boarding school.
  • The ability to communicate sensitively with parents.
  • Teamwork and collaboration.
  • Kindness, empathy and warmth.
  • Sustained energy and a sense of humour.
  • Proficient in the use of ICT for teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with boarding education would be an advantage, but is not essential.
