Job overview

Salary: L19-L25, £66,900 - £77,307 (STOCD increase will apply), negotiable for the right candidate dependent on experience plus relocation package

Start date: April or September 2023

If you really want to make your mark in a school that is committed to improving the lives of children and young people, we have the role for you.

This is a special opportunity for an exceptional leader. Wishmore Cross Academy is a special school for boys with SEMH, who require high-quality specialist support. We have high ambitions for all the pupils who attend our school and they deserve an excellent education.

We have successfully undergone a journey of improvement but there is still more to do. We require someone who is driven; someone who is able to recognise and build on current strengths whilst leading a culture of continuous improvement.

You will believe that every pupil can realise their true potential with the right support, curriculum and teaching in place. You will be committed and ambitious with a proven record of school improvement and will have a relentless focus on the quality of teaching and delivering the national curriculum. You will establish a culture that promotes excellence, equity and high expectations for all pupils.

We would be very keen to hear from potential candidates from primary, secondary or further education from either mainstream or special schools.

Wishmore Cross Academy has a dedicated team who work closely and collaboratively with families and other professionals to support our pupils to reach their full potential and prepare them for life beyond.

Wishmore Cross Academy is part of a national network of schools at Academies Enterprise Trust (AET), brought together by the belief that each and every child has an entitlement to an excellent education in every classroom, every day. An excellent education transforms lives and every pupil who attends one of our schools should be given the support, care and opportunity they need to flourish. We leverage our scale to support all our teachers, leaders and young people to be the best they can be.

You will be joining one of the largest and most inclusive trusts in the country. We have a flourishing group of special schools within our network, supported by our National Director of Special Schools and Inclusion. This headship is an opportunity to take on the leadership of a school with high levels of potential, with the support of a network of expert peers and within a trust that really values and celebrates their special school provision.

We would welcome applications from either existing principals or vice principals looking for their first headship and have strong induction and development support in place.

If you are excited by this role and believe you have the values, vision, and expertise to lead the academy to sustainable excellence, then we want to hear from you.

To arrange a school visit or to find out more, call Recruitment on 0203 947 5689 or email: recruitment@academiesenterprisetrust.org

Closing date: Wednesday 30 November 2022, 12 noon

Interview date: Tuesday 6 December 2022 (Wishmore Cross Academy) and Thursday 8 December 2022 (Virtual)

Wishmore Cross is a Special Academy for up to 82 boys (with 80 currently on roll) aged 7 to 16 who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties. We provide a highly effective and individual package of education, care and pastoral support to young people who may have had only negative experiences of school. A safe, caring environment supported by high levels of staffing ensures that each pupil has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Based in Chobham, located close to both the M3 and M25 Motorways in the north-west corner of Surrey, the Academy draws pupils from a range of backgrounds, both urban and rural, across Surrey and also neighbouring LEAs.

We're an Academy with a big heart. Staff work closely as a team and pride themselves on never giving up on a pupil. This is, however, a challenging environment where resilience and a deep commitment to supporting young people with Special Educational Needs are paramount.

OFSTED

The Academy is currently under the leadership of the Executive Headteacher, Gareth Howells and Ricardo Hylton, Head of School, who both bring a wealth of experience of SEMH and leadership with them.  Since the school moved under their leadership, it is thriving despite the challenges that Covid-19 has brought to the education sector.  The OFSTED inspection in late September 2018 judged the Academy as ‘Requires Improvement’ but highlighted many strengths.  The staff team are working hard to secure the phased changes required whilst maintaining our child-centred approach to learning.

We are committed to reducing restrictive physical intervention and this helps to create an ethos where physical aggression is rare. We also make use of restorative justice and this is successfully helping pupils to develop self-control, a sense of empathy and an understanding of right and wrong. As a result, over their time in the Academy, pupils develop more tolerant and inclusive values.
