Job overview
About the role: The Leigh UTC and Inspiration Academy are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Maths for September 2018; an additional role within the Department to reflect the continuing growth in student numbers since widening our intake at Key Stage 3. This is a truly fantastic opportunity for a passionate Teacher to become part of a well established, highly collaborative and successful team as we are confident that our teaching and support teams, our facilities and most importantly our students will inspire you. What better place to teach Maths than in a highly successful Academy whose specialism for STEM is the overarching focus? Join us for a visit at a time to suit you and allow us to demonstrate exactly what we have on offer. Please note that we are able to offer a TLR for the right candidate based on your area of interest, but we are equally keen to hear from current Student Teachers seeking a successful academy to complete their NQT year as we have a robust induction programme in place across the Trust.
As part of our STEM based learning approach, problem solving and employer links are at the heart of learning. With this approach we take pride in being extremely successful in all of our maths courses that we offer, boasting outstanding results in GCSE maths, Core maths, GCSE Resits, AS maths and Further maths. Our recent achievements in GCSE maths resulted in our students achieving in the top 10% nationally, with our disadvantaged students progressing more in all categories.
Being unique as one of the only centres in the county to deliver Core Maths at scale, has had a direct impact on Kent being rated 1st out of 150 local authorities for achievement in the Technical Baccalaureate at Post-16 level. Virtually all entries for this set of demanding qualifications in Kent took place at The Leigh UTC. 69% of our students received grades A-C and 14% grade A, compared to 47% and 9% nationally.
With the recent changes in GCSE and A-level, we have ensured that all our staff are sufficiently prepared, by encouraging them to attend relevant CPD related to mastery and problem solving. Our department is fully equipped with practitioners that are engaging in the most pioneering developments in mathematical teaching, and even leading professional development in Core maths to other centres.
Working with us: Having opened in September 2014 with state-of-the-art facilities originally for Key Stage 4 and 5, The Leigh UTC provides an exciting, innovative, business-led, problem-solving curriculum, enabling students to achieve relevant work-related qualifications and transferable skills for future training or employment. The most unique feature of The Leigh UTC is its business ethos that are emphasised by our students' behaviours and supported by our sponsors.
In September 2017, following the request of the Department for Education due to our continued success, The Leigh UTC marked history by expanding its student intake to incorporate Key Stage 3 – the first UTC in the UK to do this. Furthermore, being the first UTC to have IB World School Status has enabled us to develop strong links in Germany and Qatar. Having IB Status will enable us to further develop the mid years programme (MYP) for our Key Stage 3 students and thus providing a joined up pathway from ages 11 to 19. The overarching mission of the Inspiration Academy is to develop curious, academically-skilled young people who aspire to be principled, compassionate learners. Our curriculum strives to create students who are self-motivated, competent, willing to take risks and lifelong learners.
Recent Ofsted success! We have recently been judged as Good with Outstanding Leadership in our first inspection since opening. Our key successes and features that our successful candidate can be part of are as follows;
- The promotion of pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding
- Pupils, including the disadvantaged and those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities, catch up from previous underachievement and make strong and often rapid progress in a range of subjects and disciplines
- Application to learning is often exemplary
- The Leigh UTC makes a real difference for its pupils and surrounding area. Pupils become motivated to find and follow their passions. They leave well equipped to succeed in engineering and related technical and design careers and contribute to the economy.
Diversity at our core: As a Trust we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals we all bring something unique to the role regardless of age, gender, race, beliefs or disabilities which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise. The academy is committed to safeguarding children and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check. Our commitment to safeguarding is underpinned by robust processes and checks which are in place across the Trust.

At The Leigh UTC, we create opportunities for meaningful collaboration for staff, we provide a respectful working environment and we encourage innovation from every member of our team. Our Principal, Governors, teaching and support staff believe wholeheartedly in creating opportunities for lifelong success for our young people and believe that exam success is just one aspect in achieving this. We deliver amazing experiences for students whilst not compromising on outcomes. Our teamwork allows us to be greater than the sum of our parts - join us to achieve more than you thought possible.
Curriculum is king and we do things a little differently to other schools or colleges because we believe the most effective way to educate our students is to make our learning more hands-on. With the International Baccalaureate Middle Years programme (MYP) at KS3, GCSEs at KS4, and A-levels, T-levels and the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme (IBCP) at KS5, our ambitious curriculum offer caters for choice, leading the vast majority of students into STEM-related careers or courses.
