Job overview

Introduction

Blackheath Prep is an independent prep school for just over 370 boys and girls aged 3 to 11. Founded in 1996, it occupies a beautiful five-acre site close to Blackheath village. Its original Georgian and Victorian buildings have been extended and adapted to include large playgrounds and extensive playing fields, tennis courts, cricket nets and a Forest School area.

It is a remarkable school with outstanding facilities, a formidable track record in academic success and impressive achievements in Music, Sport, Drama and Art.

The Role

Blackheath Prep is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, experienced, enthusiastic and engaging Visiting Guitar Teacher to join our team of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers from Summer Term 2023.

Music is a defining feature of Blackheath Prep and considerable time, resource, support and encouragement is given to the musical life of the school. All children (Nursery to Year 6) receive at least two timetabled music lessons a week. In Years 3 & 4, children participate in the school’s Strings, and Wind and Brass Schemes, and are given the opportunity to learn an instrument, fully funded by the school. Around 86% of children learn one instrument with many learning more. In the current Year 6, 87% learn at least one instrument.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will possess first-rate teaching and communication skills, and an ability to work collaboratively and flexibly within a busy Music department. They will have an excellent teaching record, an inclusive approach, and a commitment to fostering a love of music for all children.

Experience of working with Pre-Prep and Prep age groups and an ability to prepare students for all elements of classical/acoustic guitar grade examinations is necessary.

In addition to teaching individual lessons, an interest in leading an ensemble would be advantageous.

Terms of Appointment

  • The post is available from Summer Term 2023
  • All of our Visiting Music Teachers are self- employed, and fees are paid directly to the Visiting Music Teacher
  •  Remuneration will be based on current school VMT rates.
  • There is approximately half a day of one-to-one teaching per week in the first instance, but there will be scope to take on more pupils as enthusiasm for the Guitar increases
  • Room space is available in the Music Department on either a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday for a fixed weekly slot

Our seven core values of kindness, curiosity, freedom, ambition, courage, community and joy, inform all that we do and how we behave as a school community. They guide our approach to teaching and learning, to pastoral care and to wellbeing, and our engagement with those around us.

We nurture our pupils both academically and pastorally, enabling them to be happy, confident and inquisitive children. Through a broad range of subjects, inspiring teaching and plenty of exciting activities, we ensure that our school is a really fun place to be where curiosity is stimulated, and a love of learning is encouraged.

Above all, we are kind, friendly and joyful school.
