There are various benefits and ways to use this resource, including:
Phonics (initial sound matching)
- linking each letter (grapheme) with the name of an animal or object (eggs/nest) that starts with that sound, reinforcing initial sound recognition (e.g., ‘a’ for alpaca, ‘b’ for bull, ‘c’ for cows, ‘d’ for ducks, ‘i’ for insects, ‘l’ for lamb or llama, ‘n’ for nest or newt, ‘t’ for turkey, ‘v’ for vole, ‘w’ for worm, ‘y’ for yak)
Matching
- learners can match the grapheme card (e.g., ‘d’) with the picture card of the animal or object that starts with that letter (e.g., a donkey or ducks)
Learning Vocabulary
- a list (included) provides multiple animals for some letters (e.g., ‘m’ for mole, mouse, moth, mare). The cards could be used to prompt discussion about other words that start with the same letter
Vocabulary Expansion
- introducing a wide variety of farm, country, and related animals and terms (e.g., alpaca, badger, foal, hedgehog, llama, newt, quail, snail, vole, worm)
Display
