This sixteen-page booklet offers guidance and advice to Higher German candidates on how to approach Directed Writing.

It is based on an analysis of the 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 papers.
Candidates are invited to familiarise themselves with :

how the pre-amble to the question is likely to read;

the kind of information they are likely to need to give for each of the bullet points;

(over 200) model phrases and sentences in German, organised under sub-headings referring back to the likely bullet points, demonstrating how this information could be provided;

how they might book-end the beginning and end of their piece of writing;

the SQA’s own (finalised) marking instructions, course reports and examples of previous candidates’ answers in the Understanding Standards section.
