This is an activity we have just finished. I had not previously taught my students anything other than mean, mode, median and range, and stem and leaf. We produced statistics on the comparison of weights of burgers (you could choose anything to weigh).
They asked me about box plots, IQR and we checked all our answers including standard deviation using the calculators (CAS).
It has been such a great learning experience for everyone, the students even snap chatted that they had burgers in their maths class (first time ever had a lesson snap chatted! )
Year 10 class was not happy that they didn't get food so I did chicken nuggets with them, not as much variation.
