Acrostic Poem Maker - Interactive Activity - KS1 Poetry

KS1 Literacy - Acrostic Poem Maker This interactive activity helps pupils to create their own acrostic poem. In an acrostic poem, the first letter of each line spells a word. Pupils firstly write their chosen word, which is then spelled out vertically. Pupils can brainstorm words or phrases that describe their word or idea, and then add these to the lines that begin with the same letters to create their poem.

The slow picture to do a slow reveal with and ask ch to annotate (lesson 1-2) is in this book. A link is available below: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=bob+cox Some of the poems and ideas presented are quite tricky for the children, this is about spending quality lengths of time on understanding and exploring which will lead to the children producing quality poems. The children in my class produced amazing poems well beyond their ability! Includes: Exploring other poems/poets Exploring the features of poems Practicing the literary techniques of poetry - assonance, denouemont, personification, alliteration, adverbs etc Exploring the concept of slow/slowly Imagining what would be moving slowly/quickly on the Titanic Writing a draft and class poem Writing a final piece In one lesson the ch watch clips of ‘Titanic’ and ‘A night to remember’ DVDs, annotating pictures on what is happening quickly or slowly. Autumn Leaf Picture-Poem Sheet, Yr1

Autumn Leaf Picture-Poem Sheet, Yr1

It’s fun to write your ideas on a picture, and this giant autumn leaf (+ caterpillar) will bring the topic alive for your emergent writers. Examine autumn leaves together first, feeling, smelling, twirling and flying them, and enact their movements too, building descriptive ideas, and simile possibilities for ‘as colourful as…’, then let them write freely on these sheets. They can use the straight lines supplied, and/or other places and angles. Colouring should be AROUND their precious words, of course!

Leaf Colour Similes in a Picture - Yrs2-3

Leaf Colour Similes in a Picture - Yrs2-3

Autumn leaves can be as red as juicy cherries or poisonous berries, but your children might think up completely different similes to write and colour round on the leaf. There are other colours to find comparisons for, too, and children will enjoy turning the sheet around to write along the differently angled leaves. There’s a line down the middle for description as well, and some creepy-crawlies to bring the picture alive. Older children can use the sheet as a starting point for extended similes and independent description or free-style verse.

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

These 8 lively, colourful pictures offer inspiration for story-writing, poetry-crafting, newspaper report inventing, and enhancement of the topics they reflect, which include: wild woods, migrating birds, ocean, sunset, jungle, wild animals (British and tropical), dragons, magic carpet rides, transport, myths and more. NB: I sketched and coloured the pictures by hand, adjusting them slightly with basic computer software, so expect spontaneity rather than professional artwork or machine neatness. I use them for all primary classes.

Autumn leaves can be - poem on a leaf sheet + guide

Autumn leaves can be - poem on a leaf sheet + guide

Let creative writing flow like autumn leaves on this curvy leaf picture, with the informal prompts to unlock their imaginations and most expressive vocabulary. The guidance sheet supplies ideas to elicit for each phrase starter, with a recommended warm-up plan below. I use this sheet with Yr 2 upwards, for complete poems and (for older) poetry launch pads, letting children spread their ideas freely over and around the picture, bypassing any starter-phrases they’re less keen on and developing those that catch their imagination. This approach stimulates creativity, builds confidence and nurtures a love of writing, I find. They can then colour around the words. PLEASE NOTE: I drew the sheet by hand and hand-wrote the wavy starter lines, so please don’t expect computer tidiness. The lines are grainy in places, but clear nevertheless. In my experience, children love this sheet.

Top 100 books to read ... Bookmarks

Top 100 books to read ... Bookmarks

I created this resource for use in my class library as an incentive to get children reading a variety of fiction books from different authors and in different genres. As part of my reading area, I have a dislay showing the Top 100 books to read before leaving Year 5 (current year group that I teach) with space for children to add their names when they have read a book. I have the majority of the books in the Top 100 in the library, so these books have one of the special bookmarks in them so they are clear to pick out. I printed the bookmarks out on coloured card and stuck gold stars on them.

Literacy Calendar 2018-19

A calendar of ‘literacy dates’ for teachers’ diaries 2018/19 - kids’ writing & reading competitions, projects, awards, annual days/weeks etc. Word doc and PDF versions included. A calendar of literacy events is something I’ve wanted to sink my teeth into for a long time. I’ve always felt it would be useful to have and to share with all staff. I think it will put an end to all those last minute attempts to conjure up activities and resources for special whole-school events and will definitely save me from missing those all important competition deadlines. I decided to produce the calendar in my role as co-ordinator for writing on the Literacy Team.
