I have been a German and English teacher for more than 12 years now. And I love coffee breaks ☕️. Coffee is just great. Over the years I have realized how much my students benefit most from lessons where THEY are the leaders, where THEY are encouraged to be proactive and learn from each other. Handing over the reins to my students doesn’t make me weaker as a teacher. It makes them responsible for their own learning and is highly motivating. I don’t want my students to be sailors. I want them to be CAPTAINS! (And I want coffee!) My teaching resources are all designed to enable students to USE the language. This is a powerpoint which introduces pets vocabulary in German - how to ask and answer the question ‘Hast du Haustiere?’ Following the powerpoint there is a ‘Happy Families’ Card Game on the topic of pets. Simply print out the card slides and cut into cards. Full instructions are included as well as prompt / help sheets which can be printed or displayed. There are two version - the easy version requires pupils to use simple sentences such as ‘Ja, ich habe eine Katze’ or ‘Nein, ich habe keine Schlange’. German - Haustiere / Pets - Board Game and Powerpoint - Speaking and Listening

This is a speaking and listening activity for the topic of pets. A powerpoint is included, introducing the German words for pets and how to answer the question ‘Hast du Haustiere?’ There are also helpsheets provided (including plural forms). Full instructions for the game are in the presentation, including ideas for how to support, extend and differentiate. Simply print slide 4 or slide 5 (the boards) for each small group of 2 - 4 players. Laminate or print on to card for increased durability. Each group will need a dice - a template is provided within the presentation to be cut out and assembled. Players take it in turns to move around the board asking and answering questions. A fun way to practise speaking and listening skills as well as vocabulary. Going through the vocabulary and playing the game is enough for the main part of a lesson on this topic. This is also a good revision activity.

ABC Die Katze lief im Schnee - song & culture linked with vocabulary and language skills work

ABC Die Katze lief im Schnee - song & culture linked with vocabulary and language skills work

This German nursery song could be used when introducing pets/ colours/ dictionary skill/ grammar . Please ask students to fold the sheet (as stated on the sheet) so they do not see the translation. I used it with my Y8 class who love singing. The are overall a bright set of students and we practised recognising cognates, dictionary skills and also looked at genders and endings of nouns. When we later covered the weather they remembered Schnee when the expression Es schneit was introduced. They have also remembered the endings for the neuter. :)

This is a first introduction to vocabs regarding the topic 'animals'. There are audio tasks involved (klick on the question marks to listen to the sounds) and some games. I also use this in Reception and Year 1, but read out the words, as they cannot read them yet. The memory game is therefore only used from Year 2/3. It is designed for two-three sessions with 15-25 minutes each. Feedback is always welcome!!! Update: I've also added a worksheet for KS2 pupils. And a 'Tierrennen'.
