Helga Weiss: Survivor of the Holocaust (Cloze and Context Clue Activity)

Context Clues and Word Elimination (Cloze Method) strategies have been proven to enhance the comprehension of higher level texts. Due to this finding, I have used these methods with my middle school students. First, I copied and pasted the entire article, *The Road to the Nuremberg Trials*, onto a Google Doc. Then, I chunked each paragraph or separate passage within the text. Secondly, I placed engaging visuals that directly aligned with the text within the text. Thirdly, I read through the passages again to denote Tier 2 and 3 terms that I knew that my students may not know and eliminated them. I placed a line or blank line in its place. I checked to ensure that there were definitive words/phrases around the missing word that could verify or prove the term's meaning within its context. Fourthly, I created multiple choice terms: Three (3) are icorrect and one (1) was the missing term. Fifth, I added an EXPLANATION box where the students are to explain why their answer choice was correct using EVIDENCE from the text. ** NOTE: During the process, the students must go through the following steps: Read the passage. Read the terms. Think about what word would LOGICALLY fit in the missing blank based upon the sentences and terms within the text. Indicate your word choice. Turn and Talk with your group members to explain your thinking. Explain your findings in COMPLETE SENTENCES using EVIDENCE FROM the TEXT to JUSTIFY your answer choice. ** This process is first scaffolded by me using Think-Alouds and annotations several times as I gradually release the level of responsibilityy to the students. **Activity Key** For demonstration purposes, I have included a key for the activity. KS3 History The Cold War, Superpowers, The Vietnam War Fully resources lesson investigating American tactics and their response to the Vietcong, discussing why they may be controversail Students watch a section of the Search & Destroy mission in Apocalypse Now and look at the who the aims of the US army, creating a success criteria for any US tactic. Students judge the impact of each US tactics (Rolling Thunder, Search and Destroy and Hearts and Minds) on the Vietcong, US troops, Civilians and US public opinion. I’ve designed this lesson as a History mystery to get your students to really engage with evidence handling and to think like Historians. I am confident that the level of detail and precision in my resources is much stronger than you will find elsewhere (because of the amount of pride I take in my own historical research). During this series of activities students read through background information before siphoning through 16 detailed evidence cards about Suffragette activity in the horse race known as the 1913 Epsom Derby. The class then complete a History mystery grid based on their findings. I hope you enjoy this lesson as much as my students do! It is an excellent lesson in helping students comb through evidence to form historical interpretations.

THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING LAKE OF AFRICA - LAKE CHAD

This unit is basically about an inland water system (Lake and connected River catchments and inflows). However, it crosses into other study areas such as - the SAHEL, desertification, global warming, climate change as environmental issues. At the human level it connects with problems relating to population increases affecting levels of income and development. As an additional issue it introduces the need for emergency aid programs and for overall plans for development. There is opportunity to search on the WEB for additional information. The shrinking of the water coverage within the Lake Chad Basins is seen through the series of Satellite photographs which allows students to follow the process by remote sensing. An added obstacle to development and living condition improvements is the presence and impact of Boko Haram within the the Lake Chad catchment area of Nigeria and along the borders of the Lake Chad Basins. At the foundation level this unit could be studied at Primary School/Lower Secondary levels as “the shrinking lake”. At Middle to Upper Secondary levels the material could be used to consider issues of Emergency Aid Relief (UN/Oxfam/Medicine sans Frontieres/Plan/World Food Relief/UN Refugee Programmes) . It also introduces research possibilities into global warming, global climate change, ITC/pressure cell changes that could be affecting global climates. Use the maps, diagrams, photographs to encourage in class discussion and debate. The attachments provide the flexibility for in class or home use by providing hard copies. The choice of black and white or colour attachments are provided. While this is basically a study of inland rivers and lakes its potential use is much broader.

It can be used with a range of abilities and has never failed to get my students excited, engaged, whilst improving their understanding of the topic. It can be used alongside any main stream resource, but works especially well with the video clips I’ve linked to this resource.
