Creating an invention to improve life of elderly people - SEN / ASDAN / PSHE / Citizenship

Young Apprentice style competition for group work - enough to cover at least 6 lessons. First lesson is an introduction to some of the difficulties that elderly people face at home and in the community. Pupils then work in groups to design and make a protype for an invention which could help. Final lesson is when groups present their ideas and vote on the winning design. Originally used for a SEN group as an ASDAN challenge.

Group debate / discussion skills

This is two or three lessons worth of work (depending on size of class). First lesson introduces what is meant by effective group discussion / debating skills. There is a group discussion task (cards attached) and links to several videos showing good and bad examples of discussion. Lesson two gives each small group chance to prepare for their own group debate (prompts included, discussing arguments / counter arguments etc). Then groups take part in their debate and prompts included for self- and peer-feedback. Originally used with an SEN class for their ASDAN course. Also relevant for speaking and listening skills, communication groups, debating groups.
