Year 7 Summer Homework

Year 7 Summer Homework

This is a booklet based on the i-spy books where students get points for spotting things in and around their homes and beyond. It covers all the chapters from the geog.1 textbook from OUP, and is designed to be a homework project for Year 7 students to complete during the summer holidays. For each item they find they get points and these points lead to house points, merits, credits, stars (whichever reward system your school uses): I even gave students a certificate for completing it. There are 20 pages which can be printed as an A5 booklet or you can choose which pages you want to use as each chapter from the textbook as a set of activities: my version only has 16 pages as there are some chapters that I don’t get time to cover. There is a word puzzle and a place for the students to keep a record of their points as they collect them, I have a place for parents to sign confirmation that students actually did achieve what they say just in case you get a student that makes it up. There are spaces for images, due to copyright I have removed the pictures that I use, but they can easily by added. The only major thing is the Tourist Information key from an OS map: they will need that.

THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING LAKE OF AFRICA - LAKE CHAD

THE CASE OF THE SHRINKING LAKE OF AFRICA - LAKE CHAD

This unit is basically about an inland water system (Lake and connected River catchments and inflows). However, it crosses into other study areas such as - the SAHEL, desertification, global warming, climate change as environmental issues. At the human level it connects with problems relating to population increases affecting levels of income and development. As an additional issue it introduces the need for emergency aid programs and for overall plans for development. There is opportunity to search on the WEB for additional information. The shrinking of the water coverage within the Lake Chad Basins is seen through the series of Satellite photographs which allows students to follow the process by remote sensing. An added obstacle to development and living condition improvements is the presence and impact of Boko Haram within the the Lake Chad catchment area of Nigeria and along the borders of the Lake Chad Basins. At the foundation level this unit could be studied at Primary School/Lower Secondary levels as “the shrinking lake”. At Middle to Upper Secondary levels the material could be used to consider issues of Emergency Aid Relief (UN/Oxfam/Medicine sans Frontieres/Plan/World Food Relief/UN Refugee Programmes) . It also introduces research possibilities into global warming, global climate change, ITC/pressure cell changes that could be affecting global climates. Use the maps, diagrams, photographs to encourage in class discussion and debate. The attachments provide the flexibility for in class or home use by providing hard copies. The choice of black and white or colour attachments are provided. While this is basically a study of inland rivers and lakes its potential use is much broader.

DESERTIFICATION IN THE SAHEL OF AFRICA -CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

DESERTIFICATION IN THE SAHEL OF AFRICA -CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES

In a world where populations pressures place strains on ecological systems the added strain of desertification adds an additional problem. The SAHEL of Africa is an area between the northern desert (Sahara) and the wetter climate zones of the savanna lands. It spans twelve African countries. Most of these have high levels of population pressure and growth. Through the use of maps, diagrams, photographs and selected situations this unit explains why the SAHEL is the major region where desertification is occurring. The unit explores the causes (natural and human) and recognises the consequences. Many of the pages are designed so that teachers can screen them and discuss them in class. The attachment pages are provided so that teachers can have flexibility in how they are used i.e., within the classroom or as individual home study activities. The story of the headman in the abandoned village of Northern Nigeria is provided so that students can gain some idea of the personal impact those affected by desertification experience. The pages providing posters (Oxfam and Unicef) indicate the emergency situationS faced by countries within the SAHEL. The aid programmes are created to assist in the short term. Coping with desertification in the longer term requires more complex and detailed planning.

Climate change KS5 Geography - real human stories to teach Global Governance, Water & Carbon cycles

Climate change KS5 Geography - real human stories to teach Global Governance, Water & Carbon cycles

This two-unit resource accompanies 10 film clips from the film Thank You For the Rain - available free on Doc Academy Thank You For The Rain touches upon core Geographical themes including the role of carbon and water cycles in shaping our environment and how humans both drive and mitigate against environmental change. Using film to examine these processes from the point of view of a Kenyan farmer turned climate activist, helps to bring them to life for students. This two-lesson unit covers physical and human processes within the curriculum, demonstrating how they are in fact interlinked. They could be used as a segue between the core themes of Water and Carbon Cycles and Global Governance. Lesson 1 focuses on the links between the carbon and water cycles and the role of feedback mechanisms in Kitui county, Kenya. Students will require some prior knowledge of the how these cycles work before embarking on this lesson. Lesson 2 follows on from Lesson 1 by assessing the role global agreements in mitigating against the effects of rising C02 levels and climate change and what this may mean for farmers such as Kisilu.
