Card Sort Source Analysis - Was Robespierre a hero or villain?

This innovative and creative activity has been carefully designed to help students assess the role played by the revolutionary leader Robespierre during the period known as the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution. This activity involves giving students ten primary sources and four secondary sources written by historians and sorting them under the headings of hero or villain. Once this has been complete, students can then have a go at answering the question: How far was Robespierre a hero who saved the revolution or a villain who betrayed his own values to take control of France?’ I would recommend that this resource should be used with either a core or advanced group as there is a lot of reading, which would be too much for a foundation group with low literacy skills. If you are looking for something a little easier, I have made a another simpler card sort which just looks at the facts. This can be bought separately. This resource makes a great starter or plenary to completed in pairs or groups. It can be cut up the students or placed into envelopes for use with several classes or even set as a piece of homework. Alternatively, your students could draw a table with the two headings ‘hero’ or ‘villain’ and list the sources under them. The aims and objectives are: Theme: The reign of Terror Know: What sort of man was Robespierre? Understand: Why are historical events interpreted in different ways? I’ve designed this for the whole school, specifically to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday. There are some video links for students to watch but there should be a link to each subject (apart from ICT - apologies) The idea is that students are made aware of the idea that Shakespeare is applicable to every subject and not just English. Any reference to a textbook is to the course textbook: Revolutions in early modern and modern europe. This should take approximately 2 hours to teach. Pupils start with a a recap crossword about the first sub unit and a half of the Edexcel Russia topic (answers are included). Pupils are then introduced to Stolypin by video, and create a timeline using this and the textbook, analysing impact as they go (answers on the powerpoint). Pupils then have a discussion plenary. The second lesson focusses on Stolypins agricultural landholdings, emigration to Siberia and the Lena Goldfields massacre, with a variety of activities including: a video, a post it task, textbook questions and comic strips. This is then concluded with an interactive freeze frame activity.

In the lesson, the textbook pages refer to the course textbook: Revolutions in early modern and modern europe. This should take approximately 2 lessons. Starter is a recap, following by a textbook task looking at interpretation events. Pupils then watch a video about the Duma before creating a timeline and then summarising how radical the first two Duma’s were. Pupils then develop this further, by deciphering pictograms about Nicholas II’s relations with the Duma’s (answers are on the powerpoints). Pupils then use this knowledge to construct a series of tweets to summarise their understanding, before taking part in an acting activity. Pupils then use the handout to work out how much this affects the autocratic state of the Russian government, before discussing how to summarise all of this information in a structured essay.

Edexcel: 2c.2: Russia: Nicholas II's response to the 1905 Revolution

This lesson is aimed at the new specification Edexcel A Level, but can be adapted for other courses studying Russia between 1894-1924 Any references to a textbook will be from the Course textbook Revolutions in early modern and modern europe, or from the Access to History book mentioned in the powerpoint notes. This powerpoint and tasks will last approximately 3 hours depending on the size and speed of your class. Starter is a recap of the different issues in the 1905 Revolution, led by the pupils. There is then some source analysis before a summary task covering the 1905 Revolution, and a crossword to assess pupils understanding of the Revolution. Pupils then look at information about each of the three responses: August and October Manifesto and the Moscow Uprising, using creative writing and perspectives. A class discussion is then held considering what if history, with examples given to stimulate discussion and consolidation of understanding, before pupils complete an extent line on the effect that Nicholas’s actions have on Tsarist power, and a round robin plenary.

Class Play based on the Victorians

I wrote this to end our Victorian Topic. It takes about 15 minutes to perform and the parts can easily be reduced/combined or expanded/split to fit any class - currently 27. We performed in front of parents and the rest of the school. The play touches on farming, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Florance Nightingale and Doctor Barnardo as well as the poverty of the era. The 3 compères sat together at the side of the stage. The rest of the children all sat on stage on PE benches, and simply stood up to say their bit. Some of the parts needed children to act together. We only sang the first verse and chorus of Food Glorious Food. Two children started it off as solos. I used YouTube for the words and music, but it sounded better unaccompanied on the day, sounded great! All the children were in simple costumes. You may want to make reference to something to show the scale of the Crystal Palace, as our pub and church won’t be known to your audience! Our exhibition was work from and artifacts we made as a class.

Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
