French Trapdoor Speaking

A set of three trapdoor activities to help Year 7s practise producing oral language in French. The basics (name, age, personality, appearance) are covered in one and there are further activities on the topics of school, places in the town and free time. Students should work in pairs with one trying to guess the option from each box the other has chosen. If they guess correctly, they move on to the next box and if not, they must go back to the start.

Claim the parcel translation game Activity for revising different verb tenses and topics from new GCSE AQA books. You have a table with different verbs tenses/sentences and project it on your interactive whiteboard/wall. In groups of 2 (max 3) they write the answer in French to one of the parcels/boxes on their mini white boards, come to you at the front of the class (you check) and if they have the answer correct they can claim the parcel/box. You write their names/team name on a post it notes and stick it over the parcel/box on the interactive whiteboard. Then, no one can do this parcel/box anymore. The winner is the group to have most parcels/boxes claimed at the end. Works well as end of module revision or translation practice. Don't forget to feedback!

Students spend 3-4 lessons (1h) to complete the project. They learn about a town in France and create a travel brochure in French. I used this activity with my Year 8s and they loved it. I included a reflection sheet to get them to think about the skills they used during this project. I paired them up but can be an individual activity.
