Berlin Wall Escape Room

Berlin Wall Escape Room

Let history come to life with an escape room lesson! Get students to puzzle their way through the history of the Berlin Wall, trying to stay in touch with their long lost friend Thomas on the other side of the wall. Engage students with a story website that will require them to work through a mix of text, video, jigsaw puzzles, codes and crossword puzzles to find their friend (and claim a prize?). This resource can be used as a revision lesson on the topic of the Berlin Wall or, with some internet research by the students, as a first introduction to the topic. It should take between 45 min and 2 hours, depending on age and prior knowledge. Little preparation by the teacher except for printing (if you choose the digital version of the jigsaw puzzle). As a native of Berlin I have been teaching this topic as part of my German lessons for about 10 years now. On the 3rd October, German national day, all my classes (aged 13-18) get a one lesson run through of the history of the wall and students are always fascinated by it. The topics covered here are: • the situation of Germany under the occupation of the allies after the war • the differences between East and West • why people escaped to the West • the building of the wall • what is the Stasi • what led to the fall of the wall • what happened on the 9th of November 1989 Includes: • link to dedicated story website • documents, excel and powerpoint files • puzzles • lesson plan • answers I have also included a powerpoint presentation of statistics showing the present-day differences between former East and West Germany and a collection of my favourite youtube videos on the topic.

German Escape Room for A Level revision

German Escape Room for A Level revision

A lesson that your students will not forget quickly! A spy themed escape room activity in which students need to do German language related puzzles to get a code to jump from one website to the next in search of the “mole” . Ideal as vocab and grammar revision for year 12 or year 13 for AQA German AS/A Level (based on the Hodder text book). Will keep them focused even in the last lesson before the holidays! It includes vocab from the topics celebrations, digital world, architecture and Berlin. There is a “digital only” version and a" digital+paper" version. The “digital+paper” version is more fun because it involves the game website and real life puzzles ( jigsaws, code wheels and string activities) that make the activities more “real”, but requires quite a bit of preparation by the teacher. The “digital only” version only requires two print outs and a little bit of taping and can be done last minute. Comments from my 6th form students: “This is intense!” “This was the best lesson I’ve had in some time!” “Can we do another one soon?” The resource includes: Link to “Findet den Maulwurf!” website Teacher instruction, including how to put together the puzzle items and example pictures Teacher answers Powerpoint with game introduction Puzzles to print out/Files for digital versions

GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES

GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES

PERFECT FOR DEVELOPING LANGUAGE SKILLS IN GERMAN WITH A REALLY FESTIVE FEEL! Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in GERMAN, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORDS, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some GERMAN Christmas traditions and figures, such as Saint Nicholas and Knecht Ruprecht. There are 5 GERMAN to ENGLISH grids, where students are prompted with the GERMAN words, and look for them in GERMAN in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an ENGLISH word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 ENGLISH to GERMAN grids, where the prompt words are given in ENGLISH, and learners have to find the GERMAN equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in GERMAN, they also complete the GERMAN word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right, facilitating learner engagement with the activity. I’ve included a reference sheet in both GERMAN and English - print double-sided, and either laminate it to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find ‘CANDLE’ and work out what that is in GERMAN - only the prompt DIE ADVENTSKERZE appears in the reference list. Use as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the CHRISTMAS season. Students do like the challenge of working their way through a number of grids on one go! There are two versions of the word searches and keys - either with a color or B&W background — you may prefer to print in B&W to keep prep costs down. Laminate the answer keys if you can - they’ll last for many CHRISTMASTIMES to come! The resource consists of six non-editable files. Please read the TERMS OF USE carefully - the resource is copyright, and for single-teacher/purchaser use only. VIELEN DANK UND FROHES WEIHNACHTSFEST!

GERMAN CHRISTMAS NUMBERS 0-31 CHALLENGE CARDS

GERMAN CHRISTMAS NUMBERS 0-31 CHALLENGE CARDS

PERFECT FOR CREATING A FESTIVE FEEL IN YOUR CLASSROOM AND IDEAL FOR DEVELOPING GERMAN LANGUAGE SKILLS AS WELL AS PRACTISING AND REVISING GERMAN NUMBERS 0-31! 36 DIFFERENTIATED QUESTIONS WITH RECORDING SHEET AND ANSWER KEY GERMAN NUMBERS 0-31 CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE CARDS really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of GERMAN numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling numbers in GERMAN. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on Numbers 0-31, but also as a starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as often as you can in lessons during the run-up to CHRISTMAS - the goal is not simply to learn how to count in GERMAN, but also to enjoy working with GERMAN, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed! The questions and design provide lessons with a real festive feel - I’ve included a mini-reference list to help students with their GERMAN CHRISTMAS words - one or two per small group of students is sufficient. The cards do look great printed in colour, though I’ve also included a B&W version to help keep costs down. The resource comprises the following 6 files: * 2 sets of 36 challenge cards (colour/B&W), 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Depending on how long you want the activity to last for, choose a particular number of cards per small group of students, and place them in a tin, bowl or small box so that students can easily select a card, and then replace at the end of the activity. You can simply place all the cards in the bowl/box and let students work their way through, either in a single lesson, or across a series of lessons - I’ve found 10-15 minutes across several lessons can work really well. Students do need to remember to file their recording sheets carefully! * 2-page answer recording sheet (x2, colour/B&W). Best printed double-sided. * 2-page answer key (x2, colour/B&W), again best printed double-sided, and laminated for longevity. One answer key for each small group is sufficient. Students find this reference sheet really useful - download it for free here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-31-reference-sheet-11743634 The resource consists of 6 non-editable files in a zipped format. Please read the TERMS OF USE carefully; the resource is copyright, and for single teacher/purchaser use only. VIELEN DANK UND FROHE WEIHNACHTEN!

Colour & B&W. 1 GERMAN and 1 English calling card, with all the words written in full These games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game. GET THE MOST OUT OF CHRISTMAS BINGO! Before playing, read all the words out loud in GERMAN several times, with students repeating carefully - this not only helps students develop their GERMAN pronunciation, but also introduces them to words they may not actually know. There are some nice long words to encourage students to look very closely! Students can also have their own calling card to read out loud from, one for a small group of students is sufficient - this will help them to link sound and spelling in GERMAN. The words focus on definite and indefinite article, plural and singular, masculine, feminine and neuter, which maximises opportunity to practise grammatical concepts too. Give students a little time to have a quick look over their grids first. Create bingo teams, each with a Christmas team name - playing competitively in teams keeps up a lively pace! For each game, select a different Christmas word as the ‘winning word’ for students to call out when they win the game. Students must recite all the words in their grids to check that they have actually won - also giving another opportunity for practising language. As you call out words in random order, remember to tick them on your calling card so that you can check the winners’ words - you’ll be able to use the same calling card for multiple games. Let students be the bingo caller too. Call out GERMAN words for GERMAN grids, GERMAN words for English grids, and English words for GERMAN grids to vary the challenge. Please read the TERMS OF USE carefully. VIELEN DANK UND FROHE WEIHNACHTEN!

Year 7 German Scheme of Work (Whole year and very detailed - based on Stimmt 1)

Year 7 German Scheme of Work (Whole year and very detailed - based on Stimmt 1)

* Each page contains a table that guides teachers on what to teach and expected outcomes each week. * Table headings are: Objectives, Grammar & Tenses, Vocabulary, Pronunciation opportunities, Questions, Possible activities, Homework and Stamps, HPA (more-able students) * This scheme isn't intended to restrict teachers' activities, but to suggest ideas in case they're looking for inspiration! * Objectives are differentiated (green - weaker students; blue - mainstream; red - very able students). * Integrates grammar pages, page resources and extension activities from Stimmt 1. * Curates activities in the books to create a logical progression from discovery to production. * Makes frequent reference to exercises and resources in Stimmt. * Plenty of time built in for practice - almost all double page spreads are allocated two weeks. * This means that some units are missed out. For example, Unit 3.4 is missed out in half term 1, but integrated into the revision stage in half term 6 and then extended to revisit the future tense. * Half term 6 revisits one module per week, often making use of the excellent 'Skills' units at the end of each module. * Modules 1-5 are covered * There is a bit of jargon in the scheme: - HPA (high prior attainment = very strong students) - Stamp - we mark students' work twice per half term, so when you see 'Stamp #1' or Stamp #2', that's what it means! - PC1, PC2, PC3 etc - stands for Progress Check. This is what we call our SIMS reporting. * The final week focuses on Catholic traditions in Germany - we're a Catholic school, so if you are too, this might be useful. * There's an extra week of lessons that actually fall during February half term. My mistake, but I've kept it in there in case you finish early and could do with more! * I'll be making Kahoots and Quizlets as the year progresses, so it's worth searching StPaulsMiltonKeynes (www.quizlet.com) and MrsWilsonBavarde (www.getkahoot.it). We already have quite a bit on these sites.
