The attached questions PowerPoint can be printed as a 2-to-page worksheet on Directed Numbers. I created this as a Dedicated Improvement and Reflection Time (DIRT) task for my Year 7 top set class on directed numbers. The resource scaffolds thinking about directed numbers, and includes a number line that should be brought to the attention of learners. I found that my class did not tend to visualise a number line independently, so the idea of this task was to get them to think about the use of the number line as a tool for thinking about directed numbers. The task starts with identifying larger and smaller numbers (number line prompt) Question 2 directs thinking about direction of travel along a number line Question 3 begins thinking about multiplication / balancing number equations Questions 4 and 5 are from UKMT Maths Challenge past papers and should consolidate thinking and uses the key word difference in Q5. ** Answers are attached in a separate file.** I hope you find this resource useful – any and all feedback is appreciated.

Maths Starter Tasks

Maths starter tasks for KS2 (Year 5 and Year 6) and early KS3 (Year 7): 36 spiral trails for mental maths starters, early finishers activities, revision, SATs preparation etc, designed to be printed and laminated and completed with dry-wipe pens. Includes all four operations, negative numbers, fractions of quantities, decimals and percentages (including percentage increase and decrease). FULL ANSWER VERSIONS INCLUDED. Each trail contains 10 calculations, which can mostly be calculated mentally. Starting at the calculation to the right of the football, students write the answer to each calculation in the box, then use the answer in the next calculation, creating a running total as they follow the spiral. The spiral ends at the goal in the middle, where the answer to the final calculation is printed. Students can then see if they have completed the trail correctly. If not, they can check where they have gone wrong. These can be used by individuals, pairs or small groups or perhaps as a whole class starter, with students swapping with a partner after completion. You might want to print trails back to back with other trails to save on card and laminating pouches. If required, you can print the Answer Versions for students to use if they are struggling to work out where they have gone wrong. Alternatively, these could be displayed on a screen as and when needed. The cards are marked as SET A. I plan to have a further set (B) for sale in my TES store in the next few months.
