Roman Numerals: Years (Loop Cards)

Roman Numerals: Years (Loop Cards)

I love to start one-to-one tutorials/interventions with a loop card activity. They are also excellent when working with small groups or as a starter or plenary for a whole class. To see all the available loop-card topics click 👉 tes.com/…/More Loop Cards….
This particular set of cards allows students to practise interpreting Roman representation of years. Note that the questions have been carefully selected so that they provide good coverage of this sub-topic and so that the opportunities for students to guess answers are minimised.
Colour coding: All my loop cards are colour-coded to indicate the approximate level of the questions: KS2 – red and orange KS3/GCSE Foundation – orange and green GCSE Higher – green, blue and purple
Further information: In this download there are four sets of similar cards and a student chooses one of the sets and sorts them into order by answering the questions. Then they try to do it faster using a different set, which has the same questions, but a different sort order 😃 My favourite use of loop cards is for two students to have different versions of the cards and race each other. They then check their answers, shuffle, swap packs and race again (quickest overall time wins). More instructions are included in the download. Cut out card size is approx. 65 x 90 mm.
👍If you like this resource, then please rate it and/or leave a comment💬. BIDMAS DICE GAME FOR KS2 - Mastery Approach

BIDMAS DICE GAME FOR KS2 - Mastery Approach

No worksheets required to teach mastery for BIDMAS! Pupils create their own BIDMAS questions using a dice and this guide. This resource has worked excellently for me and other teachers over the years; it also stops children from completing endless boring sheets working out the order of operations.

Year 4 - Roman Numerals - Shanghai Mastery Lesson Sequence

Year 4 - Roman Numerals - Shanghai Mastery Lesson Sequence

This resource can be used as a full sequence of lessons to enable children to read Roman numerals to 100 (I to C) . There are detailed animated powerpoints allowign for conceptual understanding with activities that provide procedural fluency and follow the principles of variation. The expectation is that after guidance, modelling and questioning using the various slides, all children will complete the same activities. Let children complete 1 question, then mark together and reflect/explain and then move onto subsequent slides before going back to worksheets. Examples of the shanghai mastery approach can be found online.

Use the inverse (or trial and error at first) for doubles/halves to find the answers for the missing boxes in this investigation. Ideal for World Cup topic work or for a maths starter in Years 5 or 6. Could even be used as a whole school competition - or as an end of reward. Feel free to add more boxes for differentiation or change the ratios at the beginning to make it more challenging.

A very simple way of reinforcing the prime numbers and the “look” of a prime number. With less able groups write on the bottom of the sheet all the prime numbers from 1 to 100 as a reminder. The strategy for solving the maze is interesting to watch. Some pupils start from different points trying to find routes. Some simply colour in the prime numbers at random until the routes appear! Calculations instructions for parents

Calculations instructions for parents

An information sheet I wrote on how to complete maths calculations in Year 5. There is a space on the left where I hand-wrote in the calculation (only do this once, then you can photocopy), then on the right there is a box of instructions. I gave these out each year to parents to help them to complete homework with their child and they always said how useful it was. Before making this, I was often met by lots of parents who needed a reminder of how to do long multiplication, or who were teaching their child different methods to those used in school (ending up in lots of confusion!). This sheet solved the problem perfectly. Uploaded as a word document so that the instructions can be modified to suit your school’ s calculation policy.
