Job overview

Are you looking for a Head of Mathematics role (Senior School) in a friendly and vibrant Independent School?

Bishop’s Stortford College has a strong academic reputation and is a place of learning that provides an outstanding range of opportunities for developing well-rounded, skilful and happy young people.  We pride ourselves on doing this in a beautiful environment with excellent facilities.

At the College, we are aware that it is the people who make this possible. It is their energy, imagination and enthusiasm that creates the opportunities, experiences and very special atmosphere for both pupils and staff to enjoy.

The Post

The post has become vacant on the retirement of the incumbent after 20 years loyal service. We are looking to appoint a Head of Mathematics to lead a team of nine qualified teachers, who all use a variety of approaches to teaching.  You will need to be able to teach all of the new further mathematics at A Level including further pure, further statistics and further mechanics.

We follow the MEI scheme at A level having 6 sets in the lower 6th form two of which are doing further mathematics.

Examination results in Mathematics are very good at Bishop’s Stortford College with 100% pass rates at A Level, and an average of 66% grade A*-A over the last five years.

The Senior School

Bishop’s Stortford College Senior School is, in the words of ISI inspectors, ‘an exceptional learning community’ - a place where children, as they enter the teenage years, have wonderful opportunities to become confident, well-rounded and interesting young men and women who take with them the qualifications, skills, adaptability and respect for others to thrive in the world beyond school.

Ensuring this process of all round growth – academically, morally, spiritually, athletically and creatively – is our aim. Every pupil is encouraged, taught and challenged to fulfil his or her true potential by being immersed in an environment of discovery and wholehearted participation.

Senior School pupils enjoy increasing freedom in choosing how they spend their time, with our highly regarded and extensive activity programme, in addition to outstanding sport, music, visual art and drama opportunities, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and numerous clubs and societies. The breadth of opportunity is simply stunning even by independent boarding school standards.

The College Houses are a central part of life for all Senior School day pupils and boarders. The strong sense of belonging and level of care between pupils across the year groups, and between pupils and staff, make Bishop's Stortford College a very special place to be.

Terms and Conditions of the Role

We envision this role to be a full time position. The College operates Monday to Saturday in term time.

Salary will be paid in line with our College Teacher Scale with an additional management responsibility allowance.  The payment for this role will be according to qualification and experience.  Our scale is above national average.

The position becomes available from the start of the Autumn Term, in September 2018.

Our mission is to build confidence for life. Our College is a wonderful place of learning – a place large enough to provide an outstanding range of opportunities for developing well-rounded, skilful and happy young people, yet small enough for each individual to be nurtured.

We have the time and space and, above all, the commitment, to discover and develop the potential within children, wherever their talents lie. As a day and boarding school for 4-18 year olds, with boarding starting from the age of 7, we cater for boys and girls of different ages within the family and for the individual needs of different families.

At the heart of the College, are people. It is the energy and imagination of College staff, and their enthusiasm to go that extra mile, which creates the opportunities, experiences and very special atmosphere that our pupils enjoy and adds immeasurable value to the education we provide.

Breadth of experience is naturally woven into daily life. Our pupils can, and do, pursue high academic standards whilst enjoying, and succeeding in, many other interests. Our love of life and learning enables pupils to grow into well-rounded, skilful, caring and confident people, equipped and ready for the adventures and opportunities life has to offer.

Following substantial investment, in 2017 we opened a new day house and three new boarding and day houses which means we are now able to offer boys and girls, state of the art, en-suite boarding accommodation with the very latest in modern facilities. They are something we are enormously proud of.
