About the SEMH Support Team and what we are looking for

Our service prides itself on have a long-standing history (over twenty years) of high-quality support and an outstanding reputation. We are a Swindon based service that focus mainly on Early Years and Primary aged children who present with SEMH needs. We are looking for a strong candidate who is able to advise and support mainstream school staff, role model and if appropriate, deliver interventions to pupils to meet their SEMH needs. The ideal candidate will be able to plan, prepare, deliver and review their work at all levels. They will have strong organisational skills and be able to effectively manage their own diary. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to plan and deliver training to school staff at all levels.

The candidate will feel confident liaising with a variety of stakeholders from parents to Head teachers and attending inter-agency meetings when appropriate for referred case discussions. They will be flexible with their time management as occasional ‘out of hours’ meetings may be required. The candidate will also need to complete all necessary paperwork including consultation forms, partnership plans, session plans and report writing; keeping records up to date at all times.

What does the job ‘look like’

This is one of our most frequently asked questions. Firstly, the role is very much ‘mobile’, requiring the use of your own vehicle. Whilst we mainly support schools in Swindon, we also support some schools in Wiltshire. Once the successful candidate has completed their thorough induction (working alongside other team members to understand the role and associated processes and pathways), they will hold their own caseload. Generally, you may visit up to 2-4 schools per day, caseload dependent. Each visit will be different. All visits will require you building strong rapport with school/setting staff; usually the SENCo and class teacher. However, due to the nature of the role, relationship building with senior leadership, including head teachers is also essential.

Following most visits you will be required to write high quality reports (reflecting the pupils SEMH needs) based on observations you will have completed in schools. In many cases your reports may be submitted to the Local Authority to evidence the pupil’s needs. You will also be required to meet with parents and external agencies. Meetings could include TAC, ChIN or Child Protection.

Relationship building is at the core of this role. It requires you to be empathetic and responsive to other’s needs, whilst remaining non-judgemental especially when supporting school staff or families.

If you feel you have the required skills to be successful in this role, we would like to hear from you.

More about Nyland School

To give a flavor of the school, please see the following extract from the recent Community News magazine which is issued to all parents.

The school motto; NYLAND: A FRESH START EVERY DAY. In fact, we believe in this message so much that all the staff now wear a green wrist band with it printed on!

At the heart of what we do at Nyland is a core belief that every Nyland child deserves to be treated with renewed belief and respect that they will be successful. It does not matter what ‘history’ there might be from the previous day, month, year or school. The expectation is that it will a good day for them. A Green Day! Moving on from actions or words that have happened before is not something that comes easily to children or adults. In fact, we could all do better at repairing and rebuilding relationships, forgiving each other and trying better next time.

Many of the children have arrived at Nyland because they find this hard to achieve and do not easily fit into the ‘conformity box’. Nyland is a ‘special school’ because it works with special children who need a special (different) approach to making a success of their life. We still have high expectations for learning and behavior but the ‘mainstream’ view of how we should manage and deal with this has not worked. So why try to repeat it?! We strive to give the children the very best learning opportunities that will help them make progress in their learning, emotional, social and behaviour needs. We do this by treating them as unique individuals who need to be given a fresh start without resentment but with care, love and the appropriate attention. Today and the rest of the year will be good for the children and staff at Nyland Campus
