Job overview

The British International School Riyadh (BISR) is an extremely well-regarded not-for-profit, co-educational school in the Middle East, catering for students aged 3-18 across its existing five campuses, providing high quality education to the expatriate community since 1979. The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and as a British School Overseas (BSO). BISR is also a member of the British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). Learning is holistic, supported by a broad co-curricular programme, encompassing extra-curricular activities, student leadership, service learning and residential trips. Strong pastoral care supports student well-being.

A restructuring has presented two leadership opportunities within our school to help develop all aspects of the physical education programme including the curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and celebrations of learning.

We are seeking an innovative, enthusiastic Physical Education Teacher to join a teaching team who will be committed to continuing the excellent reputation of the school. The successful applicant will be a reflective practitioner with proven ability of working collaboratively to continually evolve our programmes, and who recognises the critical role they play in enhancing our three strategic pillars: Well-being, Learning and Enrichment. The suitable applicant will take responsibility for leading and developing PE in Key Stage 2 and or Foundation/ Key Stage 1.

The position lends itself to applicants who have experience in teaching a wide range of activities across the key stages in the Primary section. We have a strong vertical alignment plan in place to enhance the students’ experience, with a department goal to ensure students find an activity or sport they are passionate about and will flourish in to become a lifelong participant. All teachers support the curriculum swimming programme and therefore having experience or qualification in this area would be an advantage.

With an expanding ECA programme the candidates will be encouraged to contribute to the continued development and growth of the department. Our ECA performance sports are Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Netball and Athletics, so a passion for one or all of these areas would be welcome. However we are always looking to develop and add to our programmes, candidates with a creative skillset are also encouraged to apply. We seek to become a beacon of excellence in our field.

As part of the facilities, the school has a 25m swimming pool, 6 lane 200m running track, 8 a side AstroTurf, sports hall that accommodates two full sized netball/basketball courts and 8 badminton courts, Climbing wall, fitness suite and three smaller spaces that incorporate a dance studio, gymnastics hall and a specialist foundation room for PE activities. Sports is a fundamental part of the experience at BISR and offers the vast amount of exposure that the students get to compete in organised activities in Riyadh; as such, we regularly attend the BSME games and Mediterranean cup. With recent successful outings the expectations are, our teams are well prepared and competitive in all trips that we undertake. BISR have also competed in the COBIS games and plan to expand our competitive calendar as we continue to develop our sporting teams. Local competitions in Saudi Arabia and Riyadh are also expanding and the school supports and encourages the department to be part of all opportunities that are presented to our students.

Teaching at BISR

Ideally, we would like to appoint teachers with UK and/or international experience and an understanding of the place of British schools in the international context, but do not be prevented from applying if you do not necessarily have international or British curriculum experience.

We have a wonderful community here at BISR. Our students are highly motivated and a pleasure to interact with every day. Our staff are committed and know how to have fun. However, although the package is generally regarded as generous, we are not interested in people who only want to join us because of the money.

We want passionate educators, who wish to work extremely hard to make BISR the best British-style school in the region, and a genuine contender for the status of flagship British School worldwide. We expect all teachers to offer an extra-curricular activity and also to contribute to the House programme.

Our sponsorship packages cater for single status teachers without families, or married teachers with their spouse and children, or married teaching couples with their children.  The  package covers up to a maximum of 2 dependent children; however, families with more than 2 children may still apply but all costs (including schooling) for the 3rd child and onward will need to be borne by the staff member. Our sponsorship packages only apply to candidates who will not be under their spouses sponsorship.  The visa process to enable sponsorship can take a couple of months to progress, so it is advisable that candidates seek advice from the BISR HR Team on the timings for taking their children out of their current school.

The Curriculum at BISR

The academic programme is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 of the National Curriculum of England. In the senior section we offer IGCSEs, and A-levels. Although we are essentially an English national curriculum school, our international context allows us to adapt our curriculum to include examples of good practice gleaned from other successful and highly regarded curricula and we are particularly keen to appoint a person who is innovative in the delivery of the National Curriculum and appreciates the opportunities that our location provides.

BISR is well prepared to cater to the academic and social needs of internationally mobile students and encourages all students to constantly challenge themselves. Our teachers nurture students who are intellectually curious, creative, respectful, caring and discerning young adults, conscious of their responsibility to the community and their environment. Parents are encouraged to work in partnership with the school and support its drive towards excellence.

The school is set up as a not-for-profit entity and is a member of The British Schools of the Middle East (BSME) and the Council of International Schools (CIS). The school is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and regularly undergoes an inspection process via PENTA to be recognised as a British School Overseas (BSO).
