Salary: £29,344 - £43,360 (M1 - UPS2 Fringe)

Hours: 40 hours per week

 

Aurora Redehall School 

Part of the Aurora Group, Aurora Redehall School, in Smallfield, Surrey are currently looking to recruit a Social Skills Teacher. Redehall School supports children aged 6-11 years with communication difficulties typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism.

Aurora Redehall School is linked to Caterham Education Centre, they share the same Headteacher and Senior Management Team, however each site has its own Assistant Head and team of Teachers and TAs. Although the sites operate separately on the whole, students do cross between sites occasionally.

Key Duties:

  • Research and develop a knowledge of published programmes, resources and approaches relevant to social skills, to include evaluating the evidence base for approaches and their suitability for students at Redehall School, in collaboration with the therapy team.
  • Work with the school’s speech and language therapist and other members of the therapy team to develop students’ social communication skills through a dedicated curriculum and support across the day.
  • Contribute to the design and provision of an engaging curriculum.
  • Develop schemes of work and differentiated lesson plans.
  • Collaborate with teachers, teaching assistants, therapists and intervention team members to gain an understanding of students’ profiles and motivators and to support carry-over of targeted skills consistently across the school day.
  • Coach and support staff to use approaches across the day and monitor the effectiveness of these approaches.
  • Keep daily records of student progress and observations, recording and sharing this information with relevant staff, parents and carers.
  • Input into assessment and reporting on skill development, progress and attainment in relation to students’ communication skills.
  • Further develop school wide approaches and initiatives in collaboration with the therapy team to facilitate social interaction and provide opportunities to practice, reflect upon, develop and embed social skills across the day.
  • Provide information and advice for parents to support them in embedding key concepts and skills at home.

Skills and Qualifications

  • PGCE, QTS, or equivalent teaching qualification and evidence of in-service training
  • Experience of working with children with ASD and social communication differences.
  • An understanding of social skills and appropriate strategies used to support them.
  • Motivation to develop knowledge about social communication by carrying out independent research with the support of the school’s speech and language therapist.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the variety of different ways that students learn and potential barriers to learning
