Job overview
A well-qualified English specialist is required for a full-time post starting in September 2023. The successful candidate will be required to teach English from Year 7 to 13. They should also have a keen and informed understanding of both English pedagogy and a willingness to use a range of teaching methods to deliver a rich, exciting and diverse curriculum.
The English Department is a friendly and supportive team that currently comprises of the Head of Department and six other teachers, two of whom are part-time. We also work closely with the Head of Drama and the Drama Department.
English is a highly regarded subject in the school with an excellent academic reputation. Girls achieve impressive results, for example: 69% gained grade A* and 100% gained A* or A at A Level in 2022. In addition, 49% gained a grade 9 in English Literature at GCSE in 2022. Students regularly go on to study English and English-related degrees at top universities.
The Department is responsible for various co-curricular activities, including Junior and Senior Book Clubs, Senior Literary Society, Debating Club and Creative Writing Society; and also organises regular speakers, as well as trips to talks and to the theatre.
All FHS staff are required to lead at least one co-curricular club and activity, beyond curriculum time. It would be desirable if the candidate had experience or a desire in Debating.

A comprehensive schedule of continuing professional development and INSET training, both internal and external, is provided for all staff. Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, is a leading independent school, for girls aged from 11-18, located in Marylebone, central London. There are currently over 550 pupils on roll. Francis Holland is in the top 30 independent schools in London for GCSE and A Level grades.
Francis Holland School was founded in 1878 by the Reverend Canon Francis Holland. It was originally opened in Baker Street, where it remained until 1915, before relocating to a new purpose-built site near Clarence Gate. The School has since expanded to include a Classics Centre and a Seminar Room, both on Ivor Place and a state of the art Sixth Form Centre, Linhope House. The School is governed by the Francis Holland Schools Trust along with its sister school Francis Holland School, Sloane Square.
