Job overview

Lister Community School is a large 11-16 Academy at the heart of its community and part of the Newham Community School Trust. Our vision is to provide a world class international education for young people in Newham.  We believe our young people have the right to the same quality of teaching and range of opportunities as at any school in the country, and our ethos is one of continuous improvement, with a focus on strong partnerships and staff development. Over the last ten years we have significantly raised academic standards and are now the school of choice for our local community.

In our December 2018 Ofsted the inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and  ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff.

Teacher of Religious Studies (RS)

Main Pay Scale/Upper Pay Scale (Inner London)

Required to start in January 2023 or earlier (if available)

(ECTs are welcome to apply)

For January 2023, we are looking to appoint an ambitious, enthusiastic and highly motivated Teacher of Religious Studies, who will be required to teach RS at Key Stage 3 and 4 as well as Humanities and PSHE to Key Stage 3.

The RS Department, and the wider Humanities Faculty, is committed to providing high quality teaching and learning for all students.  This post represents an ideal opportunity to work within a forward-thinking and professional team, in a subject area that continues to be one of the most popular at the school.

At Key Stage 3, our students are introduced to the History of Religion in Newham, we then look at World Views and other beliefs and practices (e.g. Taoism, Humanism etc.). We also study a range of ethical issues (Animal rights, Persecution etc.) and apply a religious viewpoint to each issue from each of the 6 major world religions. At Key Stage 4 we study the AQA GCSE A (8062) syllabus. In addition to Christianity, our second chosen faith is Islam. Our 4 thematic studies units are Religion and life, families and relationships, peace and conflict and crime and punishment.

This post provides an excellent opportunity for either an ECT or an experienced teacher to develop their career, as well as offering an excellent induction and support programme.  The school prides itself on a comprehensive staff development programme, focussing on excellent teaching and learning.
