Maths: Area (three activities) including LOTC Primary SEND

I have worked with Primary and Secondary SEND pupils for over 17 years and have built up a bank of resources to support their learning using visual resources that often lend themselves to being used effectively outside of the classroom. A lot of my resources can be used in places such as supermarkets and come with follow-up classroom-based work. My teaching has consistently been graded as Outstanding throughout my career. This resource comprises of three activities to be taught in succession. The learning objectives focus on teaching area. Pupils are given a number of irregular 2d shapes and have to work out the area for each of them. There is also an activity to be completed in a supermarket which asks pupils to find the area of certain aisles within the supermarket (they would need a trundle wheel for this). I have a vast collection of resources on my hard drive and have uploaded a small proportion of these; if there is anything in particular you are looking for, please contact me and I will probably have it!

Year 4: Area of Rectilinear Shapes: Problem Solving

Year 4: Area of Rectilinear Shapes: Problem Solving

Aimed for year 4 children. Learning Objective: To find the area of rectilinear shapes by counting squares through problem solving. Two differentiated worksheets for HA/MA and LA - both worksheets have two exercises. The second exercise is harder where the squares are not given to the children and there are missing measurements (for HA/MA). All measurements are given to LA. I had taught this lesson and it went really well. First exercise children can stick in their books. Second exercise - children will need to draw out the rectilinear shapes. An extension worksheet is available for those children who complete the work.

Includes: Board 29x30cm A4x2 Fractions 60 Question cards Measurement 60 Question cards Word Problems 70 Question cards Mental Maths 80 Question cards Coloured tokens to collect Excellent for a fun way to revise these important areas of maths and mathematical vocabulary. The aim of the game is to collect 4 different coloured tokens by answering questions correctly and then get back to the middle of the board. The winner is the first person back to the middle with 1 of each coloured token. How to Play the short version 15-30minutes 2-4players 1. All players start in the middle of the board. Each player roles the die, the player with the highest number on their die goes first. 2. Players take it in turns to role the die and move to a tile. Then the player must pick a card that is the same colour as the tile they are on and answer the question. If they answer correctly they receive a token matching the colour of the tile. Then they must aim to land on different coloured tiles to collect the other coloured tokens. 3. If a player lands on the tile with a die on it they immediately get another role of the die. 4. Once a player has collected 1 of each coloured token they must get back to the centre of the board to win the game. How to Play the Longer Version 30-60minutes 2-4players 1. All players start in the middle of the board. Each player roles the die, the player with the highest number on their die goes first. 2. Players take it in turns to role the die and move to a tile. Then they take a card with the matching colour and answer the question. If they answer correctly they can stay there but if they answer incorrectly they must move back to their previous position. 3. If a player lands on the tile with a die on it they immediately get another role of the die. 4. When a player lands on the larger tiles in the corners of the board they must answer a question just like on other tiles however if they are correct they receive a matching coloured token. Once a player has collected all 4 coloured tokens (1 from each corner of the board) they must return to the centre of the board to win the game! Other Ways to Use the Cards! With 270 question cards there are many ways you could use them without the board! If you have lessons focusing on Fractions (Red), Measurements (Green), Word Problems (Yellow) or Mental Maths (Blue) you can use only the specific set of cards for students to solve in groups, pairs or individually for morning activities, lesson starters, main activity or extensions. With so many flexible options this bundle you will love it!

Shape - Perimeter and Area

Shape - Perimeter and Area

Lower KS2. These worksheets allow progression to learn increasingly complex methods of comparing size of shapes. Initially, children will compare sizes of shapes by sight, then by measuring perimeter, and learning to find the length of a missing side. Then, children will count squares to find the total area, before learning to multiply the values of adjacent sides to get the answer. The final worksheet uses word problems, so the children can apply their knowledge to real life situations. This set of sheets would make a good contribution to a shapes topic, and can be worked on individually and also using peer mentoring among varying abilities. *FOR WORKSHEET 1, YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE 5 OF YOUR OWN SHAPES (BEST ON SQUARED PAPER). IN MY LESSON, I USED 5 DIFFERENT REGULAR QUADRILATERALS FOR LOWER ABILITY STUDENTS.

Maths Games KS2 BUNDLE (Four in a Row)

Maths Games KS2 BUNDLE (Four in a Row)

Expand your bank of Key Stage 2 Maths games with this bundle of easy-to-prepare and well-differentiated fun and strategic Four in a Row games. Most just require printing and laminating. I recommend printing most in A3 but A4 would be okay too. There are games for Area, Money, Decimals, Doubling and Halving 2 and 3 digit numbers and Times Tables and Division. You can find previews and more information about each resource that is included in this bundle if you click on them but here are some details: CHANGE FOR £20 2 standard game boards and 2 lower ability boards. Children roll dice to find out which column they can do a calculation in and then must work out the change required for £20 for one of the items pictured and priced in that column. Children write on the change using different colour whiteboard pens or add their initials. All answers included. DOUBLES AND HALVES 6 boards to consolidate doubling and halving of two-digit numbers. Includes a one-star version of both the doubling and halving game for younger or lower ability pupils - sidebars are included, featuring all answers, which children can strike through when used. It’s also included without the answer sidebars in case your pupils don’t need this added support. This version focuses on lower 2-digit numbers and multiples of 10. Then there’s two different, more challenging versions of both the doubling and halving boards (two-star versions). All answers included. Play as the money game above. AREA 3 differentiated boards: One-star version - area of rectangles, squares and right-angled triangles. No conversion required. Two-star version – as above but with more challenging calculations. Some conversion required between centimetres, metres etc. Includes decimal lengths and breadths. Three-star version - area of rectangles, squares, right-angled triangles and compound shapes. Some conversion required. Includes decimal lengths and breadths and more challenging calculations. Some of the compound shapes require children to work out the length of a side, using other given sides, before they can work out the area. Children will be able to do some of the calculations mentally but could use paper or mini whiteboards to work out the more challenging ones before writing in the answer on the grid. TIMES TABLES / DIVISION 4 Times Table Boards in colour and black and white versions. All 4 available in LA supported versions (with answer sideboards – see money game above), standard version (2-9 times tables) and in a version with 11 and 12 times tables added. Use whiteboard pens as in the games above. The division game (1 board) requires calculation cards (supplied) to be printed on two different colours of paper or card. In turn children pick up a card and lay it on an answer. DECIMAL PLACE VALUE Consolidate place value to 2 or 3 decimal places. 2 differentiated boards: The 1 star board was originally designed to go with the cards to 2 decimal places, while the more challenging 2 star version was designed for the cards to 3 decimal places. However, both sets of cards would work with either board. For use with this game are two sets of 54 decimal number cards featuring numbers from 0.001 to 2.01 (1 set includes numbers up to 2 decimal places, the other up to 3 decimal places). I hope these resources save you time and help your pupils learn in a fun way. Thank you for your interest.
