Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 9) Grace's Story WITH ANSWERS

Year 8 Spring-Summer SOW 2017 Development 9) Grace's Story WITH ANSWERS

A new lesson to add to the current scheme of work written last year. Grace is a common scenario given to KS3 students about the poverty in the Northern provinces of Ghana. It provides a platform for a decision-making scenario on providing solutions to poverty. The lesson begins with a settler sheet looking at key terms for development following this lesson. It has an ANSWER sheet The starter is opposite which focuses on a snapshot of Kibera based on the slum documentary 'Rich, Poor and in the Slums'. The students watch the link and produce a poem, rap or speech on poverty. The main task is developing a sense of empathy of a girl in Ghana of a similar age with a total different outlook and responsibilities in her life. The students write a speech bubble on what she is thinking. The main activity is an A3 group poster on Grace and her Ghanaian village. Please see documents attached. This is also based on the pages 12-13 of the Geog.3 textbook (coffee cup). The challenge in the development is a UN scenario whereby the students prioritize the needs of the Ghanaian village based on importance to Grace. The development stage is the DME which is feed back to the class. I have attached resources. The homework task is a media-based project in groups to provide solutions to Grace's village- I have attached links to previous work that is outstanding. There is an option to the plenary of either hot potato or the Keith Lemon's game 'Don't Show your teeth'.
