School Streets Audit - real world road safety learning around school

School Streets Audit - real world road safety learning around school

This lesson involves discussion in the classroom, followed by walks following routes in the immediate school area, then further discussion in the classroom. The lesson is suitable for all classes, from Nursery to Primary 7, with discussions modified according to the year taught. The school streets audit could be carried out by one class or year group. Alternatively, each class within the school could take a route from the school to involve the whole school in conducting an audit. There are a number of objectives relevant to carrying out the School Streets Audit: • To learn about road safety in a real-world context • To contribute evidence to a School Travel Plan • To identify areas where safety could be improved by infrastructure (speed bumps, double yellow lines, crossings, etc) in order to request such improvements from the Local Authority.

A week long homework project looking at pupil's means of travel to and from school.

A week long homework project looking at pupil's means of travel to and from school.

‘To School, and Back Again’ is a one week homework project, suitable for year, Nursery to Primary 7. Two photocopiable sheets are included – an information sheet for parents and the ‘To School and Back Again’ table. The project can be run in one class or as a whole-school homework task. Below are some of the reasons for using the ‘To School and Back Again’ homework project: • As a whole school research project to contribute to a School Travel Plan. • As a way to measure change when the school is working on sustainable journeys or promoting active travel. ‘To School, and Back Again’ can be run before and after a programme of change and the difference in responses measured. • To practise numeracy skills in completing tables and to provide data for further learning on presenting data. • As part of cross curricular studies on topics such as journeys, transport or health and physical activity.

Instructions, curriculum links and worksheet to carry out a hands up survey of school travel

Instructions, curriculum links and worksheet to carry out a hands up survey of school travel

A hands up survey for looking at how pupils travel to school and how they would like to travel to school. This is a good project for a small group of pupils, such as a pupil council, eco-schools group or road safety group to conduct. This group could also analyse and present the results. Alternatively, one class might carry out the survey as part of a transport or community project. The survey can also provide useful evidence in writing a School Travel Plan. The survey is an excellent numeracy project involving collecting and presenting data.

A Thanksgiving Inquiry Based Math Project Measure, Fractions & Data

A Thanksgiving Inquiry Based Math Project Measure, Fractions & Data

Inquiry based math offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of measure and scale, area, fractions, ratio tables and word problems with the four operations as they explore the journey made by the Pilgrims on board the Mayflower ship. Text is included with data that the children will have to identify in order to solve the problems. They will plan the journey across the Atlantic with measure and scale, they will be required to calculate the amount of food and water rations. Research will be necessary as the children have to know parts of the ship, countries , continents and oceans. Once the Pilgrims reach America, the students will design the village and plan the amount of food necessary to cater for the first Thanksgiving Feast. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found and reasoning as to their plan and design of their team’s route , their designed village and their ideas for the feast. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder., with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs. I prefer to have the children work on the pages individually before they compare their designs and work together as a small group to collaboratively create the map, their group plan of the village and planning the Thanksgiving Feast. This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for Thanksgiving or all year round. I designed it for my IB PYP 5th grade class. It can be used 4th – 6th grade too. You will find the following skills and standards ideally suited for the IB PYP Phase 4 and CCSS Math for 4th and 5th grade: •Number sense and base ten operations •Fractions: adding, subtracting and simplifying •Measure: using measuring tools , area and scale •Geometry: identifying polygons and angles •Data analysis Make math fun, engaging an authentic! You can find many more inquiry based learning tools in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Susan Powers www.PYPteachingtools.com
