Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

This picture offers inspiration for creative writing, support for medieval history or castle study and colouring. It depicts an ancient, yet still creepily inhabited, crumbling castle. A mouse (or rat?), a fallen key, a twisty staircase, candlelight, a shadow at the casement window, a narrow passage, lit at the far end, a grand pillar, stone floors - they’re all there. I originally draw the picture to illustrate a castle poem in a book of mine, now out of print.

Treasure Map Alliteration Game (Yr1-6) + Guide for Use

Treasure Map Alliteration Game (Yr1-6) + Guide for Use

This is a fun, imagination-firing, creative writing activity, centred on a pirate’s treasure map. It has proved popular with children of all ages and abilities in my workshops. It can be written individually or shared verbally, the challenge being to think up nouns to fit the gaps, with one rule: they have to start with the same letter as that of the starter word (e.g. Forest of Feet). The Guide sheet offers lists of words to prompt for - if needed, and suggestions for embellishing the activity. The challenge of thinking up nouns starting with the same letter as the starter word - and on a treasure map - motivates even reluctant writers to have a go at this mind-stretching, language-enriching game.

Alice In Wonderland Songs

Alice In Wonderland Songs

A collection of songs from the writings of Lewis Carroll - I’ve set all of the ‘Alice’ poems to music in a suitably bizarre way - so let me know if you need one that’s not featured here. These resources would be an excellent part of any work or presentation featuring the "Alice in Wonderland’ or ‘Through The Looking Glass’ stories.

Humpty Dumpty's recitation from 'Alice'

Humpty Dumpty's recitation from 'Alice'

This is Humpty Dumpty’s recitation set to a rather modern backing style. This would fit in with any module of working involving ‘Alice’ by Lewis Carroll. I’ve set all of the ‘Alice’ poems to music so let me know if there’s anything you are looking for.

The Mock Turtle's Song - The Lobster Quadrille

The Mock Turtle's Song - The Lobster Quadrille

The Mock Turtle’s Song from Alice In Wonderland, set to an unexpected tune - not a quadrille at all - but then the turtle was a mock turtle, so nothing is as expected! It’s a very infectious melody and this piece would fit in with any study or presentation of Lewis Carroll’s work. I’ve set all of his ‘Alice’ poems to music, so if you need anything just ask!

Jabberwocky Song

Jabberwocky Song

Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky, set to music. Can be used to augment any drama or performing work, or as an introduction to any work on Alice. I’ve set all of Lewis Carroll’s poems to music, in as bizarre a way as possible - if you need music to any of his other work , let me know. It would be a great Performing Arts project for the pupils to devise their own presentation of the stories using the songs as a framework.

The total amount of the individual resources combined as a bundle is £53.00 but I’m willing to sell at £20, saving you 62% What type of lessons are they? My style is very much about class participation, student ownership of learning and quick pace. Lessons come with starters, plenaries, paired, group and independent activities which last from 5 /10 / 15 / 20 and 30 mins at a time. I teach 3 hour sessions therefore all lesson have enough material to fill 3 hours. I also like to base parts of my sessions around pop culture and current issues in order to engage students and demonstrate that English is not a subject or skill confined to the classroom but rather it is a life long skill with real relevance in the world. I also like English to have an element of fun and try to encourage students to have fun with language and encourage creativity. Many lessons cover a range of levels as I teach mixed level classes, I use supportive techniques such as sentence starters, word banks and peer assessment and self assessment.

GCSE English Language, Paper 1 Question 5, AQA - writing Haiku's

GCSE English Language, Paper 1 Question 5, AQA - writing Haiku's

This is a fun, lively student centered lesson which revolves around team work activities and allowing the students to push their creativity and imagination. Many students struggle with imagination when it comes to question 5 and many panic, especially as it holds so many marks. This lesson uses images to inspire a range of vocabulary, language features and ideas for a storyline all within the planning of a haiku, therefore underpinning some of the essential skills needed to answer this question. This is quick paced session with a range of 10 minute activities which encourage independent learning and team work. I found that many students created a range of fantastic haiku’s which I made into a booklet for the students to take away with them. This sort of thing also scores brownie points with the managers and Ofsted but also helps to develop a sense of achievement and self confidence in English, which many students lack. It is also great for the students to know their work in English has a use other than for passing an exam and many feel pride in that. This lesson covers: planning for written work, synonyms, metaphors, similes, personification, hyperbole, long short sentences, imagination but can be adapted to cover much more if so desired. It ends with a peer marking assessment based on the Facebook liking system using emoticons and a chance to act like an examiner and identify language features. There is a homework task, which if desired, could be turned into a in class task other than homework. Hope it helps
