Are you studing the CIE 9700 Biology course? or are you a teacher preparing students for this course? Then this is the ultimate resource for you. Here you will find all of the Past Paper 2 Exam Questions from Cambridge dating back to 2011 (winter, summer and march papers) in an excel spreadsheet that you can sort BY TOPIC!. Each question has been categorised based on the syllabus codes so you can sort the sheet depending on which topic from the syllabus you would like to review. Extremely handy if you are studying for an end of unit examination or revising at the end of the year OR if you are teacher and need to quickly prepare an end of unit examination or a revision resource. The second tab on the spreadsheet has all the 2017 papers that have been purposefully left out of the sortable sheet on the first tab. This is so students save these papers to use at the end of the year to practice their pacing (or teachers can use for their mocks). If students post their score in the correct cell on this page, then the grade they achieved on that paper will appear. This grade is based off of that years particular grade thresholds. SB1 Mini Test

This test has been designed to assess pupils on key points from SB1 Edexcel 9-1 GCSE. For this new course students are expected to retain knowledge for longer and apply what they know. This is one of a few mini low stakes tests that can be used to assess pupils knowledge, but also used to keep key concepts fresh in their memory. It can be used as a mini test at the beginning of a lesson, as a settler activity or at the end of a revision lesson as a plenary. There will be other mini tests like this in my shop for the other units. This test is aimed at higher students, but foundation students should be able to access the content.

Worksheet that utilizes the imaginary purple people eater monsters to give students practice transcribing and translating to identify amino acids that code for specific traits. For added fun, students are asked to draw the monsters coded for by the DNA. The worksheet is 12 pages so that each student may have a unique monster! There is a full answer key included for ease of checking student work. Additionally, I have included an excel sheet of the DNA, mRNA, and Amino Acid codes for each trait for ease of making additional monster combinations.

Science end of year quiz

This is a quiz i have made and used with year 7 through to year 11 and the students love it! Half the rounds are science related (periodic table, baby animals, biology, famous scientists, music, sport, brands and more!) I split the students into groups of 3 and keep a running total of marks from each round to give them a bit of competition. The answers are on the powerpoint in the note section so don’t panic! I find it’s a great and engaging, educational end to the year.

Transcription and Translation Class Activity

Class activity where students perform the roles of RNA polymerase to transcribe DNA into mRNA. Then the mRNA travels to the cytoplasm, where a ribosome and some tRNA await to translate it into Amino Acids. Provides great review of the processes as well as emphasizing the roles of the 3 types of RNA. Also great for launching discussions about mutations and other important topics. Activity requires some prep work the first time. I recommend in the activity directions that the pieces be laminated for ease of reusing and the pieces be printed on colored paper, but this is not required. Students, other teachers, and administrators love this activity and the finished product is a great display item.

NEW AQA GCSE Trilogy (2016) Biology - Food production

This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Biology GCSE, particularly the ‘Ecology’ SoW. For more lessons designed to meet specification points for the NEW AQA Trilogy specifications for Biology, Chemistry and Physics please see my shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience Pupils are firstly asked to come up with a food chain for humans eating rice, then humans eating chickens and to consider the differences in energy efficiency between the two. This then leads onto the second slide which explains how shorter food chains mean more efficient food production. The second task is for pupils to think > pair > share ideas about methods farmers could employ to ensure animals gain new biomass at an efficient rate. Once pupils have written their ideas down in their books the answers can be revealed on the PowerPoint, students can check their work against the answers and correct anything they need to. The methods listed on the PowerPoint have disadvantages, pupils should then have a short discussion in pairs of what these negatives are before they are revealed. The next part of the lesson focuses on fish stocks, students are given some information and are asked to consider how we might sustainably manage fish stocks. Once students have some to discuss as groups and then as a class, pupils are given a set of questions they will need to answer whilst watching a video. Once this is complete students can self-assess their work. The last part of the lesson focuses on biotechnology in food production. Students will be given some information sheet in their groups and should use this information to answer a set of questions, once pupils have completed these questions they can self or peer-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. The very last task may be more suited to higher-ability classes. Pupils will be given a set of jumbled up sentences, students need to place the sentences in the correct order to describe the process of making mycoprotein, students can assess their work once complete. Students can think > pair > share their ideas in their books. Once complete the following slide goes through the possible ways in which light energy can be lost before it used to make new plant biomass. Students will listen and then need to fill in the blanks on a paragraph detailing these processes. Once this task is complete students can self-assess their work. Students are then shown a simple food chain and asked to think about how biomass could be lost at each stage in the food chain. Pupils can discuss their ideas and create a mind map in their books, why isn’t all of the biomass from trophic level passed on to the next trophic level? The next slide reveals some of these reasons, pupils can check their work against the answers. Pupils will then be given a worksheet detailing energy loss and energy transfer criteria, students need to use this information to annotate a food chain to show how energy is lost and how much is transferred to the next trophic level. There are a number of ways in which they may do this but there is a sample answer provided to demonstrate how the student could have completed their work. The last part of the lesson looks at efficiency of energy transfer, pupils will be shown the efficiency calculation and a worked example. Pupils can write the calculation into their books and then use this to answer a set of questions. Once complete pupils can self-assess their work. The plenary task is for pupils to turn to the back of their books and write three summary sentences on what they have learnt this lesson. All resources are included at the end of the presentation. This lesson is designed for the NEW AQA Trilogy Biology GCSE, particularly the ‘Ecology’ SoW. Once complete pupils can self-assess their work. The next part of the lesson teaches students about trophic levels, firstly there is a diagram demonstrating the meaning of terms such as ‘producer’ and ‘primary consumer’ and how these correspond to trophic levels. Pupils can then have a go at matching the correct trophic level to the correct title, definition and example. Once complete pupils will self-assess their work using the mark scheme provided. Students can now have a go at constructing their own food chain or food web using a set of animals cards, once arranged they should write the order in their books and correctly level the trophic levels and whether the organism is a producer, a primary, secondary or tertiary consumer. The next part of the lesson focuses on biomass, firstly a definition is given to students and then they will need to watch a video on biomass and answer a set of questions. Once this task is complete they will be able to mark their work against the answers provided. The last task is for pupils to complete a worksheet on biomass, the answers can be written into their books and either peer r self-assessed once complete. The plenary task is for pupils to turn to the back of their books and write a detailed description of the flow of energy & changing biomass through a food chain using a selection of key words as prompts.
