A detailed and engaging lesson presentation (35 slides) that looks at how vaccinations allow humans to acquire immunity. The lesson begins by recalling Cheryl Cole's illness with malaria and then explores how a vaccination could have prevented this. Time is taken to recap on the meaning of the term "antigen" so that students can understand how the body responds. Links are made to other parts of the immunity topic such as the role of lymphocytes and antibodies so that students can assess their understanding. Students will be introduced to memory cells and will learn how these cells allow a rapid secondary response to a pathogen. There is a focus on how vaccinations can be attributed as part of the success in reducing child mortality in the UK and mathematical skills are tested by looking at the calculation of percentage change. Students are guided through this maths element so that all can access the work. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but can act as a starting point for A-level students beginning this topic

The Human Body's Defence Systems

An engaging lesson presentation (37 slides) that consists of 2 lessons which look at the defence mechanisms found in the 1st line of defence and ensures students understand how the different white blood cells defend the body from pathogens. Lesson 1: This lesson looks at the skin, cilia, stomach acid, tears and ear wax that are found in the 1st line of defence. Time is taken to look at the details of each of the mechanisms and links made to other parts of Biology, such as stomach acid providing the optimum pH for enzymes. Lesson 2: This lesson looks at how the phagocytes and lymphocytes defend against pathogens. There is a focus on key terminology such as engulf, antibodies and specific and students will learn how the use of memory cells after the primary response leads to immunity. There are regular progress checks through both lesson so that students can assess their understanding. This lesson has been written for GCSE students but can be used with both KS3 and A-level Biology. However, if you are looking for a lesson for A-level Biology with even greater detail, then my alternative resources "non-specific" and "specific immune response" may be more suitable

A highly detailed, fun and engaging lesson presentation (77 slides) that consists of two lessons that look at the four pathogens involved with the spread of communicable diseases with examples and explores how these diseases are spread and how this can be prevented. Lesson 1: The lesson begins by recalling the meaning of a communicable disease and then looks at the pathogens involved. A quick competition is used to come up with the name of the 4th pathogen, protists, as it is unlikely that students will have encountered this before. Moving forwards, each of the pathogens is explored and the diseases that they cause ( in both animals and plants) Lesson 2: This lesson looks at the different ways that diseases can be spread between animals and how to prevent this. Students are challenged to think of the different methods and there is focus on key terminology such as vectors which they will have met in a different context in Physics. Both lessons contain regular progress checks so that students can assess their understanding and there is a set homework included as part of lesson 1. This lesson is designed for GCSE students
