Fundamental reactions in chemistry - lab work

Fundamental reactions in chemistry - lab work

A laboratory guide for 11 different reactions that students should know prior to joining an A-level or IB chemistry course. I have used it very successfully; it is fun, fast and students can make good observations that lead to them writing equations with state symbols. They are simple and several follow one another. For example: 1. Magnesium + sulfuric acid (hydrogen evolved, single replacement) 2. Barium nitrate + product from [1] (precipitate of barium sulfate, double replacement reaction) Other things covered: dehydration of a hydrated salt, decomposition, acid-base reactions (acid+hydroxide, acid+metal oxide), combustion, redox, exothermic dissolving. One of the reactions is used as an opportunity to introduce them to Vernier data-logging, and another to carrying out a reaction to constant mass (which I also use to discuss error analysis later on). The combustion of propane I demonstrate by doing the classic demonstration of burning soap bubbles.

A-Level CHEMISTRY Revision Pack

A-Level CHEMISTRY Revision Pack

Chemistry A-level Revision Pack includes over 30 Pages of quick questions on the NEW Chemistry A-Level. It tests students' fundamental knowledge in a short, easy and effective way. The questions are written by an Edexcel A-Level Chemistry student, with the idea that the answers are easily and rapidly found in any revision guide or textbook. Would be suitable for all syllabuses - this pack tests purely Scientific and Practical knowledge. Example questions: - Give the general expression for calculating Kp: - What is a monoprotic acid? - What effect does diluting a strong acid by a factor of 10 have on its pH? - Describe and explain how to choose a suitable indicator by using a titration curve: - Define enthalpy of atomisation: - What factors affect enthalpy change of hydration? - What is the purpose of a salt bridge in the electrochemical cell? - Describe a method of measuring rate with gas volume: - Why don’t racemic mixtures have an effect on plane-polarised light? - Why is benzene resistant to addition reactions?
