colour by simplifying surds with extension

colour by simplifying surds with extension

As the title suggests, this is a colouring sheet for practising simplifying surds into the form arootb. It covers single surds and multiplying two surds together. I first created this sheet when I was looking for something fun and different for my more able students, only to find that there was very little for them. Unlike other maths colouring sheets, each sheet only requires three different colours and therefore requires fewer teacher supplies. My students have loved seeing their work displayed on my wall. Two solutions do not fit the pattern and students are encouraged to find their own questions that will fit the pattern allowing for stretch and challenge. The solution is the pattern displayed. The white spaces are where the solution does not fit the pattern. All feedback gratefully accepted.

Colour by surds etc (includes indices with fractional and negative powers)

As the title suggests, this is a colouring sheet for practising multiplying with surds, square roots, and calculating indices with fractional and negative powers. It also covers multiples and common multiples as students are asked to colour answers that are multiples of two in one colour, multiples of three in a second colour and common multiples in a third colour. Unlike other maths colouring sheets, each sheet only requires three different colours and therefore requires fewer teacher supplies. The solution is the pattern displayed. All feedback gratefully accepted.

Non Calculator Number revision cross numbers

Non Calculator Number revision cross numbers

Two cross numbers, some overlap questions but the second one is much harder than the first. Topics include: fractions of amounts, converting fractions to decimals, calculating with money, highest common factor, percentage reduction, dividing with decimals, least common multiples, ratios, roots, speed distance time, rounding, percentage increase, and the harder sheet also contains standard form, surds, compound interest and harder versions of some of the other topics.

Mr Surd - Problem solving with surds, find Mr Surd's area

Mr Surd - Problem solving with surds, find Mr Surd's area

Mr Surd is made from a number of different shapes and his dimensions are given in surd form. The task is to find his total area. This is a fantastic problem solving exercise that really engages the students with a topic that can often be a bit dull. Every class I have tried this with has loved it. It is particularly applicable to the new GCSE spec and its more problem solving approach on many questions.

Fun revision activities for GCSE Maths

Fun revision activities for GCSE Maths

Two sets of 12 cards for students to cut up, solve and then place cards in ascending/descending order of solutions. A multiple choice activity - where each answer gives a letter. The full set of letters can be rearranged to spell the name of a band, and finally a cross number all covering multiple topics Just a slightly different way to get students to look at revision. A range of grades to allow access for all from beginning.

Fun revision activity for GCSE maths 2

Fun revision activity for GCSE maths 2

12 cards for students to cut up, solve and then place cards in descending order of solutions. Just a slightly different way to get students to look at revision. A range of grades to allow access for all from beginning. When I use this with my class, I get students to work in pairs. I also give them paper to stick the cards on once order is complete and get them to write their working around the outside. I have found students to be much more engaged than if they were just given a page of questions. The 12 included topics are: proportion, simplifying surds, trigonometry, cosine rule, substitution, LCM, percentage profit, sequences, quadratic formula, circle theorems, mean of grouped data and reverse percentages.

Surds

Surds

This Powerpoint can be used over approximately three lessons. The lessons introduce the knowledge of the surd. The understanding of simplifying a surd or an arrangement using surds and then concludes with the more complicated surd questions we see in the new GCSE structure. The Powerpoint is accompanied with two worksheets and answers, which can be used in class or as a piece of homework.
