HISTORY MYSTERY: Why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast?

HISTORY MYSTERY: Why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast?

This lesson asks the big question ‘why did the Great Fire of London Spread so far and so fast in 1666?’. Your students have to evaluate the evidence available to decide what they think was the biggest contributing factor. Students have to infer and reach a reasoned judgement based on the evidence at hand. This includes primary sources and secondary reports. The class works in pairs or groups to decide why the Great Fire of London was able to spread so far in such a short space of time. They assess the evidence to decide whether the main reason was: -Human mistakes, -Weather conditions -Housing -Firefighting equipment. The evidence is not given to them all at once, instead the teacher drip feeds it throughout the lesson. This is in a bid to challenge preconceived ideas and see if pupils will change their minds when faced with new data or sources. The lesson also works well as a station activity with the children moving around the room to gather information. The last task is to write an extended piece (like a DBQ) explaining what the different factors were and what they believe was the biggest contributing factor to the fire spreading in this way. The lesson fits with the common core requirement for students to analyse, evaluate and consider causation. It is designed for the UK National Curriculum and I have kept in the level descriptors as these may help you with grading your students as they are skill descriptors: ie: identify, then describe then explain then evaluate at the top end of ability. But if not they can be easily deleted from the slides. The zip file contains: fully animated powerpoint Clues from the scene worksheet Answer worksheet 9 minute clip from Charles II: Power and the Passion Full lesson plan description My classes have had great fun with this lesson. It can stand alone or be used a a project, for example on Stuart housing. I hope you find this useful and enjoyable. Castle picture, detailed, looking in, up, round... black/white A5 (approx)

This picture offers inspiration for creative writing, support for medieval history or castle study and colouring. It depicts an ancient, yet still creepily inhabited, crumbling castle. A mouse (or rat?), a fallen key, a twisty staircase, candlelight, a shadow at the casement window, a narrow passage, lit at the far end, a grand pillar, stone floors - they’re all there. I originally draw the picture to illustrate a castle poem in a book of mine, now out of print.

My Castle + 3 Graded Castle Character Poetry Frames (KS1)

My Castle + 3 Graded Castle Character Poetry Frames (KS1)

This 4-sheet resource comprises a castle picture-poem and 3 graded variations of a castle-characters picture-poem. These are attractive sheets with lively, hand-drawn illustrations of old, cobwebby, crumbling castles, the graded ones featuring characters such as a ghost, king and queen. Children have the fun of writing directly onto the castles - a particularly vivid experience in the ‘My castle is’ activity. Describing words are invited on each sheet. These writing frames are self-explanatory, having starter phrases followed by thick lines for writing, with increasing opportunities for imaginative, expressive input on the graded character sheets. For ‘My castle is’, prompt for describing words such as: old, crumbly, tall, spooky, dark, haunted, spidery, cold, windy, grand, royal, huge, hard, rat-infested, ghostly, scary, massive, golden, fine, splendid, stone, rich, ancient, mysterious, creepy, abandoned, damp, shadowy, candle-lit, and ruined. On the Castle Characters graded sheets, encourage a range of personality attributions for the ghost, king and queen, such as kind, mean, cruel, crazy, gentle, friendly, and various colours. The ghost might be see-through, floaty, spooky or dancing. This is principally a Literacy resource, though it also offers scope for expressive art through colouring, and an intriguing window onto the past.

The Taj Mahal Wordsearch Puzzle Keywords Settler Starter Cover Lesson Religious Building RE India

Wordsearch Puzzle sheet on the theme of ‘The Taj Mahal’. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete. Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

GustoSinga

GustoSinga

GustoSinga is INTUITIVE, IMAGINATIVE & INSPIRATIONAL. It's an adventure not to be missed! Based on truth but written with imagination, it covers an extreme journey taken by a brave woman from Africa in the 1930's. There is humour and pleasure in every page sharing a positive vibe and excellent communication with animals and people through listening skills. We are all on a journey and the Author invites every reader to join her on this one. It is written to encourage, young people – and the young at heart to embrace the future of our world with a new awareness like never before. May there be new respect for listening to experiential knowledge and to reality in the calls of nature. GustoSinga is an exciting adventure, based on truth and written with imagination. It's about a huge leap of faith made together with a lion cub called Gusto to the other side of the world to meet Singa, the tiger cub. If the elephants can share over continents as they do, may the Author's written words share an adaptability and sensitivity to cultural diversity and an important insight into endangered species, and collectively, our endangered Planet Earth. ‘I can highly recommend this book for ALL ages. The author's love and knowledge of animals shines through strongly and her experience living in Africa, U.K. and Asia contributes extensive local knowledge which excites and educates the reader and provides a memorable setting for the book’s main characters. This is equally matched by her love for humanity and every living thing which infiltrates throughout the book leaving the reader pondering many of life's conundrums. This story is so suitable for today’s fast pace…shared factually and creatively to spellbind every reader. Excellent for a quiet evening read to transport the reader to sunny climes as well as for an adult to share with a child on these cubs’ life journeys, one across the oceans in a plethora of eventualities. ‘Thank you so much Marguerite, for a unique, imaginative experience. GustoSinga links love of the natural world with man’s best and worst. I think it is a valuable allegory teaching youth to look beyond the appearance of things, deeper into the significance. We don’t know the half of what communications are going on with life around us. That’s what’s so tragic. We don’t allow the animals to speak to us, as we are all too busy. GustoSinga highlights learning to reconcile the peacefulness of allowing nature to exist. It is as if there is a competition for space – the animals to be themselves for enriching our lives. Why do we hunt? What makes man kill? Can that be turned around?’ “Story telling has always been the best way to communicate a message, and the message from Marguerite’s latest book is loud and clear. GustoSinga offers a very different way of looking at the animal kingdom from the Attenborough type of documentaries or the Disney cartoons.
