Working with us: Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School was founded in 1701 in order to provide an education to young men who would go on to work at the famous Chatham Dockyard. More than 300 years later we still pride ourselves on providing a superb academic education alongside an unparalleled range of opportunities for personal growth and character development. Ofsted judge the school to be ‘Outstanding', a grading the school has held since 2005. The comment that stands out to us is, “students thrive within its distinctive ethos, enabling them to succeed academically and to develop into confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared extremely well for their future lives.” In our last report the lead inspector noted that ‘Pupils and students are thoughtful, polite, courteous and respectful. The school’s culture helps them to feel safe and happy. Their behaviour is exceptional. Pupils have extremely high ambitions. Parents and carers are enormously positive about the school.’
In 2012 the School became one of the first 100 National Teaching Schools and in 2021 was successful in converting this into becoming one of the first 35 National Teaching School Hubs. Alongside our work as a National Support School, our position in Leigh Academies Trust and as the lead school in the Kent and Medway Maths Hub the school is in unrivalled position to offer superb support and training to any new member of staff, regardless of their role, or their experience.
On 1st January 2019 the Williamson Trust merged into Leigh Academies Trust, providing a stronger and more developed central infrastructure to further improve the school.
