Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, proactive and student-centred Head of Boarding from September 2023 or January 2024. You will have demonstrated successful pastoral care for students in a previous role, preferably within a school with boarding provision.

Ruthin School has a strong academic record which is attained through teaching which challenges and supports in equal measure. This is supplemented with first-class pastoral care and a broad range of elective activities which allow students to develop the skills to succeed in their studies and prepare for the world of work.

The school is located in a beautiful part of the country, set on the edge of the charming, historic town of Ruthin and at the foot of the Clwydian Range (an area of outstanding natural beauty). Whilst we enjoy a rural setting, we are only an hour from Manchester and Liverpool to the East and close to the coast and Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park to the West.

The post of Head of Boarding is a key role in our provision of safeguarding and pastoral care. The post holder will act as one of the School's Deputy Designated Safeguarding Persons, and will be an integral part of our extensive ‘golden network’ of safeguarding across the school. You must have the ability to lead and manage a team of staff very effectively, and possess excellent communication and administrative skills, in order to support the welfare and pastoral care of students.

It may be possible for this role to be combined with a Houseparent role for the right candidate.

This role can be non-residential, but due to the nature of the role the Head of Boarding needs to live close to the school in the event of a problem in the evenings or at weekends, and needs to be prepared to come in to school at short notice to support the boarding staff team to deal with any problems that may arise.

Family accommodation is available year-round, and if provided the post holder will be required to be resident in this accommodation during term time. Council tax, water rates and utility bills will be paid by the School. Meals will be available in the School during term time.

You will be expected to undertake at least one duty slot in each of the boarding houses each week (i.e. with four houses this means a minimum of four duty slots spread over the week). These should vary in day and time from week to week, to maximise the understanding of the nuances of each House, and the staff that work within each House. The rota for this will be drawn up by the Head of Boarding and agreed with the Director of Safeguarding.

You can read more about our school and this superb opportunity here https://www.ruthinschool.co.uk/about-us/vacancies/

Applications will be considered from both teaching and non-teaching staff.

Applications should be sent to hr@ruthinschool.co.uk.

Applicants should send a covering letter, detailing suitability for the post, along with a completed application form and self-declaration form.

Closing date for applications: 9am, Monday 27 March 2023

Interviews, at Ruthin School, will take place in the w/c 3 April 2023

To arrange a confidential discussion with the Head, Deputy Head Pastoral, or the current Head of Boarding, or to arrange a visit to the school, please email hr@ruthinschool.co.uk or call 01824 702 543.

Ruthin School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and all applicants (and any resident family members aged 16+) must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the position, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
