Brighton College Vietnam is looking to appoint a Head of Music (Prep and Senior School) to start in August 2023.

Specific Teaching Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic practitioner, and possess a good degree from a leading university. He or she should also have a proven track record of excellent exam results and first rate classroom teaching practice. The successful applicant will show a desire to hold the highest standards in terms of organisational and pedagogical skills. A willingness to contribute to the rich extra-curricular life of a busy school is always advantageous.

  • Overseeing the teaching and learning of Music throughout the College.
  • Liaising with the Deputy Head in matters of monitoring of pupils’ progress in Music.
  • Providing inspirational teaching and leadership within the Music department, not only to consolidate the central position of Music within the school, but also to foster excellence in all that the department does.
  • Liaising with the Deputy Head on the staffing of the department, and the recruitment of new colleagues when required.
  • Overseeing the development and updating of the departmental handbook and scheme of work to ensure that a varied and inspiring curriculum is maintained at all times.
  • Taking a lead in the future development of the Music department and showing strategic vision.
  • To be a powerful role model for colleagues as an outstanding practitioner. Developing staff by organising and advising on INSET and the selection and induction of new staff, including acting as a PGCE/NQT mentor.
  • Holding and minuting regular Music departmental meetings.
  • Attending regular Head of Department meetings.
  • Maintaining close links and regular contact with the professional bodies with which the Department hold membership.
  • Teaching around 90% of a normal timetable of Music lessons.
  • To be responsible for the delivery of all music performances/concerts given by Years 1 to 10, ensuring all performances/productions are of a high quality and standard.
  • To ensure that all pupils in Years 1 to 10 have the opportunity to participate in at least one performance per year.
  • To direct a high-quality piece to be used at Speech Day, including adequate rehearsal, arrangements for set up, and attendance on the day.
  • To oversee all concert logistics, including venue selection and staging, involving relevant staff where necessary.
  • To liaise with other College departments on the production of PR material, ticketing and visual/sound elements of performances/concerts.
  • To deliver and promote the activity of the drama department through drama evenings and after-school recitals.
