Job overview

We are looking for three gifted and talented Heads of Year to develop a culture that celebrates success and effort in equal measure, ensuring the highest standards of respect, hard work and progress (our values) across a year group (s).

These are exciting positions for candidates who have the passion and belief that as teachers and support staff, our role is to educate young people to be the very best version of themselves. We are looking to welcome colleagues to join our team who have demonstrable aspiration for all the young people and the staff who come together daily as part of our community.

Theale Green School is part of the Activate Learning Education Trust consisting of seven secondary schools. We have a rich history in both Sport and the Arts, as important contributors to every young person’s development. However, we have now established a rich and broad curriculum which reaches into every corner of our school. We pride ourselves on our vision of being the School of Choice for our local community, and through valuing all relationships within our community, ensuring that every person has a voice and striving to be a Well School, we are well on our way to our vision being reality.

As a result of extraordinary growth over a three-year period, we are delighted to invite you to apply for the post of Head of Year at Theale Green School. Due to the need to recruit new and additional teaching staff to match the growth in students on roll, we are in the unique position to advertise both internally and externally for this post.

From a starting point of 513 (NOR) in September 2018, we are looking forward to welcoming approximately 750 students in September 2022. To explain further, Year 7 has steadily grown from 75 in 18/19 to 150 students in this academic year, with a further increase predicted for September ’22; our Sixth Form is also growing with a high internal conversion rate from Year 11, in addition to growing external applications. This strong and sustainable change in direction has come about from a development of an exceptionally supportive culture, and the word “family” is often used to describe our school. With an OFSTED visit now long overdue, we are delighted that the community has placed their trust in us as we see more children join each year. The growth of the school since joining ALET in 2018 is part of a five-year plan, and without doubt focusing on what matters most -  the quality of teaching and relationships between people – has driven us firmly towards our mission of “Theale Green School is the School of Choice for the Community”.

Initially we are seeking to recruit three Head of Year posts:

  • Year 7: 165 students (and Year 6 transition)
  • Year 8/9: 260 students (and Options process)
  • Year 10/11: 220 students (and GCSE/transition)

As we continue to grow, and each year group reaches the Published Admission Number (PAN) of 180, the posts will develop accordingly. We are seeking three candidates who can clearly demonstrate that they have high aspirations for all young people, value the quality of teaching above all else, are always willing to give and receive feedback and want to be part of Team TGS.
