Job overview

Vermont School offers an inclusive education to young people with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. As a special school for primary aged children who experience challenging behaviour, our ethos is that our children, parents and staff are all part of the Vermont family that Belongs, Believes and Achieves together.

Due to the planned retirement of our Headteacher, the governors, staff and children are looking for an inspirational, visionary leader, with the ambition to lead our school from Good to Outstanding.

Vermont, in partnership with home and the wider community, is committed to provide exciting, challenging and high quality teaching and learning within a happy, caring and supportive environment. Here children are encouraged to respect and value themselves, celebrate their achievements and to nurture an independent spirit for their future. We also have strong links with the Aspire Community Trust, linking us with other schools in the area.

Strong candidates will possess the following:

  • a clarity of vision and purpose
  • the ability to inspire and motivate the whole school community
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • deep empathy for the young people with a range of complex SEMH needs and difficulties
  • a bold and challenging approach to making changes
  • the ability to rise to the challenge of supporting and encouraging the development of our children’s social, emotional and mental health while maintaining and enhancing educational standards.

In return, we can offer you:

  • the opportunity to work with wonderful young people and their parents and make a significant difference to their lives.
  • the ‘Vermont Family’ who support you and each other while giving their best for our children.
  • a committed and strongly supportive governing body.
  • a positive and creative environment.

This is a challenging role for a talented leader dedicated to Vermont’s long-term success. It is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to our young people’s lives.

In addition, you’ll be working and living in one of the best locations in the South, as our school is based in Southampton, a major cruise and container port city on the south coast close to the New Forest National Park and major tourist attractions, with excellent air, road and rail connections. The city hosts two Universities with a combined student population of 40,000 as well as a broad range of colleges and 79 state run schools.

Visits to the school, preferably during the school day, are welcome. Please contact the office to arrange this. We will organise some of our Gold Band children to show you around with the deputy headteacher or SENCO.

To arrange a visit please contact the School Office;
